I thought it was as easy as just renaming it in finder, and did so on one of my friend's mac but was I ever wrong I almost f***ed his MacBook up or so I thought... :)

But we ended up solving it by making a new admin account and then gaining access to his old files and finally deleted his old account..
 
Don't do it.. i did it to an older machine.. just for fun, and messed it up to the point of having to reinstall to OS. Recently my brother decided to do it and despite my warning.. well.. lets just say that he is coming to visit me so that he can back up his files and reinstall the OS.
 
There is a way to change your short name and Home name but it's quite complicated. Clearly Apple don't want you doing this. :eek:

Note that that's only for pre-Tiger...though their wording is a bit convoluted in that they don't even mention Tiger. They really don't want you to do it these days. (Although those steps should work.)
