Where do you go from here? is this now basically your main home mac?
It is my main system until the Quad arrives. Then the drives will be transferred to the Quad and two of my other drives will be placed in this Mac. It then becomes a secondary graphics station which I have a use for.

The 2.7 dual I have coming may be going to work as one of my stations there. The G4 is going to work to serve as an off site server.

Annnnndddd…everything back to normal. But better!

What I thought might happen did. I believe the seller assumed these cards I bought were NVIDIA 6600LE's.

They aren't.

They are 6600's which means they have 256MB and not 128MB. Yay me!

From most of its time an All ATI Video card setup on the Quicksilver to an All Nvidia setup on the G5 :D it gives you proper core image across all your monitors now which should help nicely with pushing the GUI around among other things. nice on the 6600LEs turning out to be 6600s :) (its a good thing he did not send you 2 7300GTs from a Mac Pro as they look a lot like a 6600/LE LOL)

so how is performance with the G5 setup like this? any noticeable boosts over the Dual 1.8Ghz QS?

also Nice to see the G5 is placed on the desk :) keeps it away from the dusty floor/carpet.

Yeah, I thought that was an interesting twist. The Quad will break that though as the main vid card will be the XT1900.
I think maybe these cards were an earlier version of the one I have now which is perhaps why they were mismarked.

The difference is stability. I can do things without having to worry if the Mac is going to lock up. Overall it's faster.

Yeah, I was looking for a way to make this all fit and it just worked out this way. Got tired of having to move stuff in order to open the Mac.

Would be nice if you could test your power consumption with that G5 instead of the G4.
BTW it's the more reliable G5 ever produced. Congrats

I know how high my power bill got with the G4. I will see how high it gets with the G5. However, unlike with the G4, I can sleep the G5. The G4 had to remain awake all the time because it had a WD green drive inside and it seems those drives cause issues with sleep.

Nice score on the video cards. Quick question - I see the ADC/DVI convertors under the cinema displays but what are you using to make that stretch from the farthest monitor to your G5? That's one long cable.

Looks good :)

Yeah, those are the A1006 converters. Was very lucky on those. I have a spare one that will eventually be put to use. The plan is all 23" Cinema HD Displays, but as you can see I've only gotten so far on that plan, LOL! :)

I purchased an extra long SVGA cable earlier this year to connect that monitor to my G4. Last night I tried one of the DVI cables I have (these Gateway FPD1810s look like junk, but they have VGA and DVI ports) but it was too short. So, I put to good use one of the DVI/VGA adapters I got with one of my past video card purchases. Since these displays are not ADC it works.

So, bit the bullet one more time tonight and transferred the runway card and Airport Extreme card from the first Mac.

Now running with standard built in Airport and BT.

Wow. how heavy are the Displays in total?
They aren't that heavy, but the "desk" they are on is a particle board "coffee" table that I converted to a "desk" by using longer legs. It doesn't weigh that much. All the stuff on it is not in the middle so it leans.

Ben here knows all about 'new' particle board furniture, and then the superiority of properly made furniture

LOL!

It was a table we bought when my daughter became a toddler. We didn't want her destroying the 1950s era solid-wood coffee table we got from my uncle when he died. He was a carpenter who's productive years were during the 1920s and 1930s. All the inlay work was done by him.

Wrecking a $20 particle board table was preferable even though it's an inch and a half thick. Considering how hard she is on things now it was a good decision then. :D

For those who may care…my electric bill for January has been tabulated. And the Dual Core 2.3Ghz PowerMac G5 running 24/7 on the automatic CPU setting from December 30th to January 14th has resulted in an increase of my bill of…$23.

If I double that to approximate 30 days that's $46. Not too bad. We'll see what SRP (Salt River Project) says next month which will be a full month of 24/7 operation.
