I've tried to find an answer to this and apologize if it is too simple, but I'm moving to Africa and ordered an upgrade IP4 to replace my IP3 (with AT&T). I want to activate my IP4 so I can unlock it and jailbreak it for use in Africa, but I need to continue using my IP3 while still here in the USA (another 2 weeks). If I activate my new IP4, will my old IP3 no longer be usable since my contract is only for one data plan and I bought the new IP4 as a replacement? Thank you for your help!

No. Only If it comes preinstalled with 4.0.2 and that's not gonna happen.
If it has 4.1 or 4.2.1 it cannot be unlocked.
Pwnage is just to maintain The baseband on older firmware and let you upgrade to new without losing your unlock.

Can I go ahead and activate it, downgrade to 4.0, then unlock and reinstall 4.2?

Yep, sorry about the bad news but better to know now than get a surprise later:)
The 3G you can unlock if you want.

I've read about people who stick another SIM card in just to activate their i4 so they can use it as a glorified iPod. Would you know if I could do that without the activation replacing my i3 since the i4 was purchased as a replacement phone?

You could do that but the i4 has a microsim not a regular size sim.
Or you could buy a used AT&T micro sim on eBay for $1-2 just to activate the i4 and use it as a touch.

Thanks. Any idea what that will do to using my i3 on the AT&T contract? Would you think activating the i4 might make the i3 inactive through AT&T?

Not if you use another sim to acivate it othen than the one on your 3G.
If you use a different sim even an old inactive microsim it won't interfere with your current 3G sim or account.

Were you planning to cancel your contract when you moved to Africa? Because you'll have to pay a $350 ETF to cancel your contract.

No, I was going to pass it on to my daughter or someone else. It has the unlimited data for $30/mo
