activate without sim card? just want ipod features

Just want to convert an old first gen phone into a ipod for the kids but it is loced waiting for activation, "insert sim" is there a simple way to o this? I do have an activated sim for a flip phone thru at&t but otherwise just two microsims from iphone 4's. Help please

Restore it to 3.1.2 and then run redsnow or blackrain to hactivate and jb.
Then it will let you in the homescreen without activating it officially and picking a plan etc...

I had to ask my friend who still uses a 1st Gen to borrow his sim for a minute.

Real annoying.
