Activating iPhone 4 with someone else's SIM

I just got a used iPhone 4 that needs to be activated. I plan on unlocking it, and I would hacktivate it but I don't know what OS it is running (crossing fingers for 4.1). My roommate has an iPhone 4 as well, can I use his SIM to activate it? Im just scared of extending his contract!

Yes, you can. It will not change anything to his contract or account.

Welcome and good luck.
But even if its on 4.1 you wont be able to unlock it.
You need 4.0.2 or lower on it to unlock.

Thanks. Yeah I checked the baseband, it's 02.10.40 so it looks like I'll be waiting a bit. Oh well, it was free 🙂
