Folks,

A buddy of mine purchased a Verizon iPhone X at full price from the Apple store and brought it to India. I just turned it on for the first time and I am trying to activate it, but it is asking to be activated on Verizon first. Is there any way to avoid this and have it activated directly on my local carrier?

Please help!

Have you tried to insert a sim card from your networks to see what happens?
In the UK when you get a sim free phone does not mention any network when you set it up.
Just ask you to activate using a carrier or wifi. I usually insert my sim card and go through the setting process.

I have put in my local sim, but it's refusing to go through the activation process unless I enter the billing zip code and last 4 of SSN of my buddy's verizon account. I am wondering if there is any way to bypass this.

Looks like the phone is locked to the network. Only way is to get it unlocked via the network.

Odd thing is that Verizon phones are not locked to any network, and I paid full price upfront. This is just so bizarre!

Your friend ordered online, where they require you to have a Verizon account. Your phone is useless without that information. Once you get that info, the phone will be unlocked and work with any carrier.

They don’t ask for an account when buying from the physical Apple store.
