I am upgrading to an iPhone XS Max tomorrow. I bought the phone outright at full price with ATT as the carrier.

Do I just turn on the new iPhone when it arrives? Or do I pull the sim from the current phone and put it into the Max before turning it on? Will the sim in my iPhone X even fit into the XS Max?

What is the correct procedure?

Thanks!

I have the same question. I have heard using the new SIM card would be better. Is there any way to activate the new phone using the SIM card that is in it rather than swapping from my current device?

SIM from current phone before you turn it on.
Thanks, this is what I was thinking.

I heard that using the new sim each year is better, too. Last year, I bought an unlocked full price T-mobile iPhone X to use on ATT. In my unboxing excitement, I accidentally powered on before removing the sim. I thought I had done something very bad, but thankfully it worked out.

Put in your old SIM before turning on the new phone. That way you don't get hit with a upgrade fee.
OMG BasicGreatGuy, you ARE your username, thank you so much ! If you message me your mailing address I'll send you something cool. (I am female but I'm not just being polite!)

ATT recently slammed significant new unauthorized charges onto my phone after calling to cancel Showtime from my DirecTV and I agreed to merge / unify my billing. They have never followed up on my calls to a supervisor after an "investigation".

I would have left ATT if it weren't for the new iPhone timing and not wanting to change carriers right before the iPhone comes out.

So I am hugely averse to giving them 1 cent more than I ever need to. And hugely grateful to you for that tip!
