A friend of mine wants to pair an AW4 with an iPhone X but has lost his Apple id is there a way of finding it out or unlocking the activation lock.

Believe they are referring to Activation Lock.

If you have proof of ownership of the activation locked device, Apple might be able to help. But otherwise, it's an expensive paperweight.

Apple ID should be listed in Settings, at the very top of the iPhone (your name here section). Tap that to see email address used for the account. Or App Store app: tap the silhouette at the upper-right to get same information.

You can go to appleid.apple.com to try to reset your friends account password, if that's an issue.

Reactions: Hi Tek and DeltaMac
You (I mean your friend, of course) can reset (change) a forgotten AppleID password.
All you need is your friend's correct responses to the security questions at the AppleID support page @ appleid.apple.com

If the account is locked now (because of too many wrong guesses), then that same page should help with how to proceed.
