iOS developer Hamza Sood has tweeted a series of screenshots from iOS 8.2 that provide a closer look at the upcoming "Activity" companion app for Apple Watch previewed on the Apple Watch microsite. Activity does not show up on iPhone until an Apple Watch is paired with the device, at which point the app provides a comprehensive overview of your daily activity and workout history. The main History tab allows you to view your Activity rings on a calendar to track how much walking, standing and exercise you have done, sorted over the course of a day, month or year. A second Achievements tab displays a grid of achievements that are unlocked for reaching personal bests or milestones. The screenshots reveal there are at least a dozen achievements to unlock.

Apple is pushing the health and fitness capabilities of Apple Watch as one of three main selling points for the wrist-worn device, the others being communication and timekeeping. The upcoming Activity app is an important feature in that regard, and looks polished in time for the Apple Watch's release next month. Apple will begin taking pre-orders for the Apple Watch on April 10 ahead of an April 24 launch.

I use Moves app on iPhone for this purpose. All it told me that I really did spend 4 hours in that bar rather than the 30 minutes we said we would.

Also very good tracking your walk (stagger) home when drunk.

This will be revolutionary for the Apple Watch. Drunk Walk.

influenced by the beats music app? :D could it be any darker? sometimes I don't understand apples UI decisions

There should be some epic/legendary achievements: like running 1 km every day for 5 years (without skipping out)

The could do it "apple style"

To show your progress - they could have each model of the iPhone and show how it's gotten thinner over time.

Congratulations! You are now the thinnest you've ever been. You are the best you yet! A marvel in human engineering.

I'm a gym fanatic. So this is very cool. I'd purchase the larger sport version for $249.99 in a split seconds. $400.00 is still TOO MUCH.

In the end its a accessory, you have to have a iphone for it to work. I can't justify >$300 for a accessory, especially one you have to charge everyday and will have lost its battery in under 2 years.

BUT, if they had a alcohol body content analyzer through sweat, i''ll buy it tomorrow for $500!

The reason the Apple Watch companion app and the Activity app are dark is because the Apple Watch UI is largely dark to blend with the bezel. Thus, the app UI matches (including the font, funny enough)

Why is the apple watch app icon so ugly and un-appley, they should have just made it be a shot of the homescreen circles of the apple watch face.

Really hope I can somehow link my Garmin and/or Strava accounts to this Activity application. Since the Apple Watch does not include GPS, I will not be using it to track my running or biking activities. My Garmin also tracks swimming (indoor and outdoor) that I would like to have reflected in here as well. Even if it is just summary data, and I still use the Strava/Garmin apps to see details, I'd want this glance to be able to show a summary of all of my daily activities.

Count again. There's 15 plainly visible on the screenshot, and it looks like another row of 3 is just barely peeking out from behind the tab bar at the bottom of that screenshot, so there's at least 18.

I thought screenshots were under NDA. Story soon to be updated "ex-developer..."

Aesthetics aside, this design (black background with vibrantly colored text & graphics) makes total sense on the Watch for two reasons...

1) In an AMOLED display each pixel is lit independently without a backlight, so you can conserve a lot of battery power by not unnecessarily lighting up an empty background. In other words, a black background consumes almost no power while a colored background of any type requires every single pixel to light up and consume power.

2) On such a small display, simple and high contrast screen elements enhance readability.

8.2 beta??

This should hardly be unexpected.

I wish my fitbit could be linked. I won't be able to wear my Apple Watch while playing basketball and that is my largest step event in most weeks. I know fitbit is trying to keep its desktop app relevant against the health app. But it is ultimately a losing battle. Fitbit makes some nice devices, but it should allow its data form the devices that I buy to be shared by me to other apps.

Has anyone seen evidence of an iPhone variant of the Workout watch app (as opposed to the Activity app)? I use Nike+ right now for tracking jogging, etc. but it seems natural that Apple might want to be able to manage the Workout data on iPhone as well.

Can't wait to read reviews comparing it to the Nike FuelBand - that improved so much from launch, became a lot more accurate and the software was consistently updated too.
