Why is the apple watch app icon so ugly and un-appley, they should have just made it be a shot of the homescreen circles of the apple watch face.

From Apple's perspective, having the full profile of the device is a marketing move. They wanted literal over abstract in this case so that people get interested. They are essentially pushing an advertisement for the Watch directly to every user that upgrades iOS or purchases a new phone.

We can decide whether we like that or not, but it is a marketing move that will sell many more watches than if they had not done it. iBooks is proof of that: https://www.macrumors.com/2015/01/15/apple-ibooks-1-million-new-users-per-week/

Can't wait to read reviews comparing it to the Nike FuelBand - that improved so much from launch, became a lot more accurate and the software was consistently updated too.

I love the FuelBand, but the Apple Watch has so many more capabilities that I'm not sure it is a fair comparison at all. Apple is essentially demoting the functionality of the FuelBand into being just another app on the device. Add in the heart rate monitoring capabilities and a display...there's a reason why Nike discontinued the FB.

I think Nike made the right choice to focus on software. Looks like Nike+ Running and maybe some others come pre-installed on the watch?

Warning: Some in the US congress may object to health focused devices and apps.
Because they are sponsored by McDonalds and other large fast food chains, most of them jerkoff MCX merchants ;). They don't even want you to pay for it with an Apple watch.

Less than 1 day battery life.

Pretty useless if you're really into your health and fitness given that sleep tracking is a huge area of that. I'm sure the Apple Watch II will come with that. The heart rate monitor isn't even touted as a feature for health and fitness but more of a gimmick used to send to a close friend or partner "in the moment".

The Apple Watch should stay as a phone for your wrist. If you want to buy a device for health and fitness then a dedicated tracker is much more useful and less expensive.

They should have done the same with the Apple Watch app. Hidden until connected via bluetooth as someone else said. And Newsstand. Hidden until you request it. And with Stocks, Tips, pretty much every stock app besides weather and the necessities (messages, phone, email, etc.)

The heart rate monitor does show you your BPM. The Garmin Fenix starts at $599, whereas the Apple watch starts at $350. We are comparing Apples to Apples here.

they shoulda made the "Apple Watch" app hidden in iOS as well until you connected to your watch via bluetooth.

Yeah. Imagine walking into an Apple Store, buying your :apple:Watch, and then your iPhone "magically" notices the watch and says 'hello and walks you through the setup. I, for one, would be praising how cool and thought out that user experience would have been.

Just buy a USB extension cable and loosen the strap enough to put the charger on while attached to your wrist. Just turn turn too much otherwise you might get tangled or choke to death.

So Apple should set everyone's phone up just the way you like your phone? You like weather, messages, phone and email, so everyone else should be locked into those apps as well. Thanks a lot!

Except (maybe) for the phone app, I'm sure there are people who never use each of your "necessities".

Excellent, time to make the world healthier.

You're intentions are good but Apple Watch is only as effective as those who are willing to do the work themselves. The watch will only track data parameters.

I feel extremely fortunate to have grown up in a family that placed a very serious focus on fitness, nutrition and a super active lifestyle filled with competitive fun sports. As such I'm super fit and already have a full compliment of the best tracking tools like my heavily used SUUNTO fitness watch and computer interface developed in concert with a large cadre of professional athletes. Yet even that is useless to those who are not committed to an active healthy lifestyle.

So while it sounds good, not one aspect of Apples Watch will get the complacent people off the couch. :)

You are correct about folks needing to commit and put in the work.

The one thing I'd say is that Apple is working to make health and fitness fashionable on a mass scale. We've seen what kind of impact they can have on various activities simply by throwing their weight behind it. Fads become trends, trends become habits, and habits become routine.

This is the beginning of a very long game, but one that I'm glad Apple is playing in.

Apple said that this app is hidden...

Apple didn't try to hide the fact that the Activity app is part of 8.2. In the update/release notes for 8.2 it says "New Activity app for viewing fitness data and achievements from Apple Watch; appears when Apple Watch is paired"

The could do it "apple style"

To show your progress - they could have each model of the iPhone and show how it's gotten thinner over time.

Congratulations! You are now the thinnest you've ever been. You are the best you yet! A marvel in human engineering.

It's all fun and games now, but wait until Jony Ive is sneaking around your house late at night, waiting for an opportunity to bead blast your skin for a flawless satin finish.

With my best Jony Ive impression, "you are unapologetically fat"

How many people do you know that are into fitness and wellness? I bet a lot.

How many people do you know that uses a smartphone? I bet everyone you know.

Thats a problem with iWatch, you have to convert most people into being more healthy people. That a noble cause, but not a sure product success.

On the other side, you don't have to convert people into being a smartphone users, they are all eager to buy one. Thats the genius of the iPhone market strategy.

I only hang with fit, active people. Time is so valuable that on weekends I'm always outdoors, even if it's raining. Those in my group are all at the top of their game, so fit that others simply cannot keep up. And that IS_NOT a criticism.

We all have things we love to do and I have the same respect for those who have other interests. I have an appreciation for many things in life, it's just that I choose to maximize my free time by doing fun, challenging and often very dangerous sports. If I crash and burn...Oh well I was doing what I love. I'm just not a person that can sit around.

I can tell you one thing in no uncertain terms. I have no interest in changing others. It's their life. I find people who want to change others, repulsive. Why stick your nose in other people's business. We've already got a person who's taking away our freedoms, racing towards socialism, but enough of that.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of Apple and others smartwatches.

That's what I was thinking at first, but then wouldn't you need the app to pair the watch? I honestly don't know, but I figure that could be the reason.

If I wore a (relatively) huge Apple Watch in bed and rasped it across my wife's chest during the night I'd get a punch in the face and no s*x for a month... Shoving my iPhone under my pillow however... works brilliantly.

Women huh!
