I am trying to streamline my system because it's been sluggish lately. I have a 17-inch Powerbook G4 with a 1.67 GHz processor and 1 GB of Ram. I am running OS 10.4.11.

After reading an article in MacWorld magazine, they suggested finding "hidden" processes that might be slowing down your processor. They instruct you to use the Activity Monitor to see what your processor is doing.

I have used Activity Monitor in the past without problems, but when I try to open it now, it bounces once in the dock and just stops.

An additional problem, possibly, I am unable to get the machine to boot in "Safe Mode". I shut down, press the power button, wait for the startup sound, then press the shift key until the grey apple and progress indicator are on the screen and I release it. Then it just stays on that screen for a very long time and never gets past it. I've let it go for 10 minutes to try to get to the finder screen, but get frustrated and restart in regular mode which takes about 1 minute.

Another bit of info, I installed World of Warcraft on this machine yesterday. I don't know if it might be the problem, but throwing it out there just in case.

Thanks for all of your help in advance! I need a new machine, but I want to squeeze another 6 months or so out of this one... Thanks!

Activity Monitor doesn't work on my iMac either. I'm on Leopard though. World of Warcraft doesn't have anything to do with it as far as I know, I've had WoW on my computer forever and Activity Monitor worked fine... until I upgraded to Leopard...
