I don't know where people are getting the info that it's heart rate related, but I think it's not.

My wife did another workout and her average HR was > 130 this time. Still didn't count it.

I think it's related to pace! Anything under 3mph seems to not count. It counts as a workout, but not the exercise ring.

(hers was 2.5 mph average, but on a big incline.....)

Maybe it SHOULD use HR, but I think it's depending on pace.

In my original example, I was doing nearly 4.25 mph walking fast

So two days in a row the exercise circle was slowly going up as I did very little exercise, like cleaning the house. I got full circles on those days from doing lawn work. So I have gotten complete circles.

The next day, I noticed it wasn't going up. I took a long walk, and it didn't go up. I then did an indoor cycle workout with a 140BPM heart rate, for 30 minutes, and it didn't go up.

Health recorded everything properly.

Has to be a bug.

Doing lawn work, vacuuming that sort of thing, have actually been proven to be as effective as a workout, so it's probably correct.

I think when you choose "other" it logs all your minutes regardless of heart rate. I remember Christy Turlington Burns (in one of her blog vids) saying when she does yoga, she makes sure to log it using "other" so she will get credit for it.

Bringing this to the front as it seems like an important point.

Anecdotal, but I've had no problems tracking calories or workouts this past week. I train after work, and at that point I usually have 2-3 minutes of the 30 minute "exercise" ring filled in. I'll choose "other" from the activity app and then let it log, and it does it accurately.

What I have noticed, is that the watch isn't taking my heart rate every 10 minutes. It will do it perfectly and then reach 2 hour stretch where there is no data. This has never happened during exercise, though, it's just at random times.

Also, it is only using the green LEDs every time it is checking heart rate, even at the 10-minute intervals.

Same thing happens to me but for RUNNING too. Well more like jogging. But still!

I am using the workout app. Here is what the workout even says FROM the iPhone Fitness app.

Workout:
Outdoor run
Avg Heart Rate 142 BPM
Total Time: 1:02:51
Distance: 4.8 Miles

Activity Workout measurement from that same time:
6 Minutes.

6 MINUTES!!

I've had a similar issue where it didn't count my walk. Today I am going to try and log it under "Other" and see if that works.

I did 30 minutes on the stationary bike yesterday. I was working up a sweat. The watch registered the workout as I had used the WORKOUT app (not the circles), but it did not transfer it into the Exercise circle. I was miffed.

So then I sat down and watched TV for 30 minutes while starting another workout under "OTHER", and the watch promptly filled my Exercise circle.

Lesson learned: If you care about the circles, use "Other". At least until it's fixed (since I think it's a bug).

make sure that you don't have the setting for track heart rate during runs or walks set to off.. there is a setting in activity on the iphone app for that.

Depends on you age for the most part. If you are over 70 then 108 bpm is moderate exercise. If you are 40 then you would probably need to be at about 150 bpm to register. Here is a chart to use as a guide. You would probably need to be at least in the low intermediate aerobic (green) range to receive credit.

YES. This is why. Thanks for posting

Looks like people were right. I went for the same exact walk I did yesterday, but put it under Other and I got credit for it under Exercise.

I haven't been able to get any achievements for my workout activity...used other today for 55 minutes and it registered in the activity app but not the achievements.

I did too

I went for the same walk as yesterday, and get credit too!
but I actually still selected outdoor walk, crazy this watch.

todays crazy update

So, here is todays crazy update and test

I started pre-workout with NINE 9 minutes of 30, must have been just walking around the house, work, etc..

Then I did my first workout - weights tagged it as OTHER, 23 minutes (I actually hit the X button by accident, so I had to do another on top of it)

Then I did another workout - weights tagged it as OTHER, 23 minutes again

Then I did 21.5 minutes on the stationary bike (tagged as INDOOR CYCLING), trying to get heart rate up, even though many times while doing weights and squats it was banging at 165, 170

Then when I got home, I did another OUTDOOR WALK for 38 minutes, same walk as prior day, nearly the same pace

So, what is the total on the activity tracker for the day? 115, I recorded 115 CLOSER ENOUGH FOR HORSE RACING.

So, it DID add the OUTDOOR WALK as activity time THIS DAY, but not YESTERDAY.

Makes no sense, must be a bug.

I did three outdoor runs. All of my time and calories went toward the Activity circles. I noticed it takes some time for the Activity app on the iPhone to update though. Sometimes you gotta force quit the app and then open it up again in 10 minutes, and then it will be updated. Anyway, I didn't have any trouble getting my runs to count probably because it says my average heart rate was 182 bpm.

Did you stop swinging your arm while walking? Looking at the Watch? Maybe it thought you stopped, but the iPhone continued detecting.

What is up with the standing activity? I know for a fact I got up a million times from my desk today. Somehow it's only saying I got up 10 times.

I did a tennis workout today and used other on workout app.
Recorded all data but not in the activity app. I turned off and when I turned it back on I saw it had recorded all data in activity app.

Just reiterating what a few other people have said, it takes a while for the workout data to migrate to the phone app.

it doesn't count the amount of times you stand up. It counts the hours in which you stood up at least once for one minute. So it's saying 10 hours out of the day you stood up at least once for a minute or more.

hmm. that's interesting. I have my bootcamp workout this afternoon which I will test the HR during sweat. My FitBit Charge HR did alright during these workouts but would sometimes stop recording HR or not get an accurate reading due to sweat.

just updating this. I did another elliptical workout last night, but this time I initiated a "workout" from the Fitness app. It worked extremely well that way, and counted it toward my exercise on the Activity app. Kind of a bummer that I have to initiate it, I thought it would just detect that I'm working out. Maybe I'll try it again without the initiation sometime.

not a phone issue

Just reiterating what a few other people have said, it takes a while for the workout data to migrate to the phone app.

the issue that originally started this thread is that the workout data is not updating the activity app on the WATCH

continues to baffle me

Well, it continues to baffle me..

just when it seemed to work, today it's back to making NO sense.

I started a walk with 7 minutes of 30 activity. I did a walk for 55 minutes, tracked it as outdoor walk, got heartrate up over 100 most of the walk, sometimes 110-120, and walked for 55 minutes.

Now, the activity tracker says I have done today 47 or 30 minutes.

NOT 55 minutes, and NOT the 62 that I would expect.. Actually more like the 55 for the walk MINUS the 7 I started with?

Activity Tracker doesn't track WORKOUTS? WALKING?

I have walked for approx 40 minutes 4 times since getting my watch, three were outside and one, this morning, was inside on a treadmill. The watch tracked all three throughout the walk and seemed to work flawlessly. The outside walks resulted in my achieving 40 minutes of my 30 minute exercise goal but this morning on the treadmill I only got 11 exercise minutes. It truly doesn't make sense because I actually worked harder on the treadmill than on our flat roads (because of inclines and interval speed adjustments).

After a bit of research I found this... per the Apple Watch manual: "Outdoor and Indoor Walk/Run/Cycle are distinct workouts because Apple Watch calculates the calorie burn differently for each. For indoor workouts, Apple Watch relies mainly on your heart rate readings for calorie estimates, but for outdoor workouts, Apple Watch works in conjunction with iPhone (which has GPS) to calculate speed and distance. Those values, along with your heart rate, are used to estimate the number of calories burned."

When you say "worked flawlessly" what about calories burned?

On non-running days I typically walk 20-25 min on a treadmill WITH HILLS + 15-30 min of weight lifting. Twice now, I've split the workout in two, 1) Walking Indoors 2)other

Walking seems reasonably accurate v.treadmill for pace, distance and even HR but is way, WAY low on calories burned. After a 25 min walk w/hills at a "brisk" walking pace it only gave me 101 calories burned one day an 99 another. It should be in the 225ish range. My HR is often in the 120-150 range for this walk.

On weights, "other" seems reasonably close enough. Especially since calories burned during lifting is about 100th reason on the list to actually lift weights.

I'm considering next non-run workout to just start in "other" and leave it there the entire hour (5 min stretching + 25 min walking + 30 min lifting) and see what happens.

I do LOVE running with the watch and Nike+ GPS app. Both inside and outside has been useful to have the Watch.
