#1. All Paid Apps, especially GAMES, need a free demo period. Unfortunately, screen shots and youtube clips do not help anyone decide if they want to purchase an app.

#2. No ads. If I see ads on my apps, I will erase them. Period. We'll see how long that crap lasts.

#3 If future free apps contain adds, it will be a failure for developers as their apps will not be downloaded anymore. They seem to have no idea how much people hate them. Everyone would rather pay for an app than deal with ads. (But most are smart enough to do NEITHER when the situation is unreasonable).

4. Updating Already Free Apps to Include Ads = Spam imo. I will delete them and notify the developer of my thoughts.

If i see one ad on my mobile device, ill erase the program immediately.

Agreed.

Allowing ad-based content into the system will inevitably cripple the user experience on the iPhone.

I can see it now: At the end of any given ad, a dark-blue popup window (similar to that of an SMS message) asks whether the user would 'like to visit the company's website'; tapping 'Okay' launches Safari (and exits out of the application), while hitting 'Cancel' allows the user back into the application, or in the worst case scenario, the possibility of viewing another ad after the first one has finished.

Hell yeah dude, people are really raging against the advertising machine by refusing to download iPhone apps like iPint and NYTimes... oh wait both of those are in the top 25.

I can see it now:

Again, the ads simply cannot be obnoxious or the developer is shooting themselves in the foot. Advertisements only make money if they're viewed. If your app includes obtrusive advertising, no one is going to use it, and with no one viewing adds the developer makes no money. It's in their best interest to make sure the ads are as inconspicuous as possible.

I don't understand this at all. What's so bad about a few unobtrusive ads?

Personally, I'll welcome ads. I rather see a few ads so that I don't have to pay for the app.

Not all developers have the same standards.

Just as advertisers go to great lengths to differentiate themselves from one another (e.g. popup ads vs. banner ads), I don't see why developers should be any different.

These ad-supported applications are going to have little (if not, no) cost to the end-user. That said, I don't see it being completely out of the question for developers to employ these tactics - if ad-supported content is a likelihood, then it's inevitable.

No, people expect them to charge for the app. I sincerely doubt that Apple will even allow ads in apps - it just sounds to me like a way to get around Apple's 30% cut.

Excellent point. I too expect the developers who create great content to make money by charging for that content. I certainly see how Apple gets cheated when developers make money by selling ad space.

I have already erased the Jirbo games based on this thread.

I agree. If ad-supported "free" apps become the "norm" on the App Store, then there will likely be no more App Store... iTunes supports itself by people paying for music, videos, etc. The App Store needs to be able to do the same.

I also think that a free demo period would be helpful. This is nothing new, developers have been doing it for years. Send out a version with limited capabilities or levels, and then drag the players back in to the App Store for the upgrade.

Add me to the masses who would rather pay for an app than have it ad supported. I hate ad supported applications with a passion and would never have one on my iPhone.
