Apple TV+ has been available for a week, hasn't it? Is anyone watching it? Is anyone enjoying it and thinking they should pay for it?

I am watching it. I read initial reviews and thought it was going to be crap, but so far all of the shows I have watched and have been really good. See, Morning Show, and For All Mankind are all awesome. Very good quality, HBO level. As long as Apple keeps investing and the quality is just as good, people will watch.

The chances of Apple succeeding in the overcrowded streaming market with their litany of mediocre, milquetoast, and politically correct shows is approximately nil.
"Politically correct"? What show are you talking about? The one where everyone is blind? The one about a 19th century female poet? The one where a guy gets fired from his TV job for OHHHHHH Ok, got it!

Really excited for the TV adaptation of the best selling table-top game "The Cones of Dunshire"
Same! Adam Scott was one of the best things that happened to Parks & Rec. When he was added to the show, it really began to blossom. (Rob Lowe too.) He's wonderful. His podcasts are great too. He's one of those people who's personality really shines through.

I really can't get my head around the negativity for Apple TV+, what exactly is the issue here?
If you don't enjoy what's available, then simply don't watch it, it really is that straight forward.

There will be plenty of people who do enjoy the shows and I'm sure it will be very successful for Apple. Good luck to them. People are so quick to put others down...it's pretty sad.

I don't really care either way, but I wish there was a filter on this site so I didn't have to see it. I'm not signing up for it as I already subscribe to enough services, but it feels like most of the articles lately have been about this service only.

I am quite negative about Apple making tv shows. There are a billion box sets out there already and businesses used to stick to the mantra of being experts in their field, and not diversifying too much. What seems to be happening is that they are heading for the jack of all trades, master of none approach. I am sitting on a new iPhone 11 Pro that has not worked properly from day one, and Apple are taking their sweet time in fixing the problem.

So yes, colour me sceptical!

Apple’s been streaming video since 2008 and according to those who have watched, the quality of ATV+ is excellent.

People need to let go of this notion that for the Mac to win Apple TV+ has to lose.

One thing does not take away from another. Different divisions. IOS developers are not off making tv shows.
What apple is doing is adapting to an ever changing market. Companies who do not adapt get left behind. And services make a lot of money. I for one am hopeful they are successful in all that they do.

And this is an apple news site. As such you're going to get apple news for all their products and services. As it should be. Read what you want. Skip the rest. Simple as that.

"The show is described as a workplace thriller set at a company "looking to take work-life balance to a new level."

In a World...(cue the Bourne music)

where an HR hit squad has left their office and is heading down to your floor at impossible speeds, careening around corridor corners...who made the comment about the way someone was dressed today? Will you be able to leave early...and will you be able to come back tomorrow...

If the above mentioned workplace thriller / work-life balance was the "one sentence pitch idea", I can't even imagine what this is about...or why it was approved for production. Will wait and see, but hopes are not high.

Agreed, P&R really grew once Scott joined the team.
He was also great as the jerk/evil boss in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (which is a beautiful movie, with a beautiful soundtrack).

ATV+ = $5B USD annual LOSS until AAPL decides to Kill It !
I was thinking similar, but then it only takes one or two break out hits to really put them on the streaming map. Early days yet but agree, I’m not sure these beginning titles were the most inspired choices

I hear ya... Would be like Apple entering the crowded music player market. Or the mobile phone market; with a screen keyboard no less.
Thanks for saving me the time of writing that...

That’s encouraging to hear. Will binge watch on my upcoming 19 hour flight and see. They need a game of thrones / walking dead / Star Wars etc. Once they get that, the deal will be sealed

I don't know, looking at the salaries and costs for these shows I am not sure that this can go on without sucking funds from other sources.
Aniston and Witherspoon make $20M each per season. Carrell is about $6M per season. Just for the salaries of those three and one show is 920,000 fully paid subscriptions ($50/yr). This without considering any amount used for sets, other actors, pre production, post production etc. Add the fact that each subscription pays for multiple shows and I don't know how this can be sustainable.

Ahh of course you’re right, because Tim Cook reassigned all the engineers who were working on fixing your iPhone 11 Pro that has been broken since day one, to working on the film sets of their new slate of movie content. Those dastardly engineers, always wanting to put on their film directing hats when they should be sat down at their engineering desks.

They have billions upon billions upon billions sitting around gathering dust. They might as well do something with all that spare cash lieing around.

I’m not an idiot that thinks they have pinched iOS developers to do video editing. That wasn’t my point. Apples focus is now on services and less on what made them the great hardware/software company that they are, or were anyway. It is my belief that it is no coincidence that there have been many hardware issues and a record number of iOS software updates in quick succession. Sure, good luck to them if they pull it off but, like I said, I’m sceptical that they will.

That's not what I am talking about. Of course they have enough money to make movies/TV series and give them away for free or at a low cost. The question is the sustainability because if they use the amount of money on a total, certain loss on entertainment instead of redirecting it to other types of losses (research for example) or something that actually makes sense (hire more SQA engineers? reduce prices?) then something in their judgment is wrong.

You’ve answered your own question. The fact there are so many software updates is testament to the fact that they are on it. They respond quickly to fixes. Which means the resources are there. You cannot compare iOS and hardware today to ten years ago as it is MUCH more sophisticated and complex. And Apple are leading the way. I am fairly certain they had much more **** ups in the past.

Most large companies operate at a loss for a long time. How many years did it take for amazon to turn a profit? They were hemmoraging money for a long time. And now they're not just a retailer. They run most of the web and make their own hardware and software. They own twitch, ring and audible amongst many others. They make their own tv shows and movies.

Getting into streaming requires your own content. Which requires a massive investment. It will take years to even attempt to recoup the initial investment.
