Maybe I'm not understanding...

Why do you want to hook up another DVD player? The iMac already has one built in and the "DVD Player" application to play them.

I was told that the imac won't play divx. Maybe my info is bad, but i'm new to the mac world and i'm not sure.

Sorry if some posters made you feel unwelcome, but congratulations on switching! But for your problem, download and install VLC. If you don't know the difference between PPC and Intel CPUs or not sure which you have, just pick a download location from the top where it says universal binary.
