I used to be able to use Adaptive Transparency on one AirPod but now, after a reset, there’s a message that says it only works when two are placed in my ears. I had to reset because my left one wasn’t charging correctly. A
 
Did you try doing a full unpairing and repairing (i.e. remove it from your iCloud account)? First time I've seen that message.

I did notice, though, that Adaptive Audio won't even stay selected if the pods aren't in your ears. After a few seconds, it will just switch back to another setting (noise canceling in my case). So it's possible the latest firmware changed the behavior.

Try going into Accessibility from AirPods settings and make sure Noise Cancellation with One
AirPod is enabled. This seems to enable Adaptive as well. It's working for me.
