Today I went out around noon with a friend in Manhattan, and the last place I remember having my iPhone 4S was in an H&M store on 125th. All I did was check a text and that's it. We went to have a bite at a cafe next door, and then we went to go apartment hunting. Right when we got into the agency, I did the pat-down and freaked out because my phone was totally missing.

I ran to the apple store and tried to use find my iPhone, but the phone was offline. I remotely locked and left a message to please call my friend's phone number to return the phone. Tried calling. At first it would ring twice, then go to voicemail. Then only voicemail. An hour or so later, my friend tries calling it again, and it starts ringing for real. No one picks up. We run home and I do the Find My iPhone again. This time the phone registers, all the way in Brooklyn on Freeman St and Manhattan Ave.

I went to my local precinct in Harlem and filled out a report, but they said they couldn't do much because it was considered Lost, and not a crime, because I didn't see who actually took the phone. At this point I consider it a theft though because they are ignoring my pleas to return the phone to me, the rightful owner.

I called the precinct local to the area pinpointed on FMI, and they said I could come down there and some officers would escort me to the area. I just don't know what can really be done at this point though. Anyone could just lie and say they don't have it. I'm gonna go down there soon anyway, but this really freaking sucks. The phone is offline again at this point, btw.

I had the unlocked 64 gig 4S btw, so basically the most expensive version you could buy. :'( First time I've ever had this happen. So bummed.

Edit: The phone is now found again on FMI at the same location. Assuming it's their home.

Sorry man that sucks. Not sure if banging on doors in that area would be such a good idea.

Be nice if your phone was jb and using the I caught you app. Then you could show a pic of the person to the police lol.

Go down to the precint and have the cops escort send a message to the person that you know where they are and so do the police also trigger the alarm you may get it back!

You can make a phone give off an alarm for 2 minutes using Find My iPhone.

Except if the person has the iPhone in their hands, they can just press a button to dismiss the message/alarm.

I want to do this when I get to the building/area, but I only have a laptop at this point which I might not have wifi connection for. My friend has a 4G android phone, is there a way he can load up find my iPhone when we get there? The regular website wasn't working in his browser for some reason.

Sounds like it was lost not stolen. Sucks though

These guys are always leaving their phones lying about, then calling them "stolen" dumbarses :D

Well, if it was a gsm 4s, then he lost the most valuable iphone of them all, congrats

he cant dismiss the alarm unless he can unlock the phone you said you locked it so your good,Just make sure your with the cops thats not the nicest neighborhood in my fine city

It sucks people dont do the right thing anymore if you really lost it.

I say set off the alarm and have the police scare the person into giving your phone back... good luck

Have him download Dolphin browser. I just checked and all the functionality of icloud.com works fine on it. Its a little slow to load but it works and the map is accurate.

I agree with the comment above about using the android phone to tether the laptop when you get there to sound the alarm. You should keep us informed about the situation if you try anything. I'm genuinely curious as to how this situation turns out.

I hope there's a shootout and we see it on the news :D

Is your phone worth getting hurt for?

As NYC is one of our fine cities that doesn't allow you to do much to protect yourself (and if it did, it still wouldn't be wise to walk around with a laptop, that might get stolen, forcefully) what do you really expect to do? Unless you are Chuck Norris, I highly doubt they are going to just hand it over.

Sorry it happened, but life lesson, pay better attention to where you put things. Expensive lesson, but I bet it will not be repeated. Don't make it worse by playing detective/cop.

I'm a couple blocks away at McDonald's right now, gonna check out the area with my friend before going to the precinct. It's a really white hipster area (greenpoint) so I'm not really worried. We think it might have been a young kid who took it. Of course I have a bag for the laptop and everything, not going to take out my MBP on the street. Just going to survey the area. Will update.
