Here is a recommendation. If you spent all the time that you have been looking for/worrying about this lost iphone 4s actually working at some job (even a college student type job), you would have already paid for a new one by now. The iphone is the hottest piece of tech on the planet, especially in NYC - land of the over privileged. People have them stolen right out of their hands on the subway every day so its hard to feel bad for you when you actually left it somewhere and expect it to get returned, highly unlikely. Your iphone is long gone - start planning on how you are going to replace it. Give law school a shot - bill 2-3 hours to a client and you will have your phone back.

I'll bet he would've spent more time trying to find a job (that means NOT working/getting paid) than he spent looking for his iPhone.

Unless minimum wage is 200 an hour that does not make sense.

Double check your renter's insurance policy. A lot of them have theft insurance included, albeit subject to your deductible. Even with a $250 or $500 deductible, getting something back for an $849 phone is better than nothing. Also, if you bought your phone in November, check to see if your credit card company has theft protection. American Express, for instance, includes 90 days of theft protection. Depending on when in November, you might be able to make a claim.

Why not just get a replacement iPhone on contract rather than a Galaxy S III?

Greenpoint isn't that bad. There's a large Polish population there and it borders Williamsburg, which is a trendy area.

I don't have renter's insurance. I just rent a room in an apt of students. I just googled with Visa, and they have some sort of 90 day theft thing, but lucky me, I bought my iPhone on Nov 9th, which makes it just out of reach. I'm on a family plan with T-Mobile that my parents pay (the only thing they pay for for me otherwise I'm on my own). Signing a new contract with a different carrier on my own would just add to my monthly expenses.

Next time, teather that F'n thing to your neck. ;)
I would be freaking if I lost mine.

Do you have any idea how you lost it? Do you leave your phone out sometimes? Just curious if you have some idea when it might have happened.

Have you gone back to the stores you were at on the 16th and requested video surveillance recordings? It may be unlikely, but the person who took it may have been caught on video doing it. This way you'll have an accurate description of the person that you could use to give to police/be sure you're kicking the right dudes ass.

Even if you had the video, the police probably wouldn't do anything. My friend's was stolen, they SAW the person, had their name and address; and proof via findmyiphone that it was at their address. The police just said..."We can't do much on phones and things like that. If they turn it in, we'll be sure to give you a call."

I truly feel sorry for those who have their iphones stolen...I think finding them via findmyiphone just makes it worse; because you KNOW someone else has it, and no one will help you.

Check to see if you are under your parents' policy. If not (for the future), consider purchasing one, as they are not that expensive. I'm assuming you have other items worth covering (e.g. computer, A/V, textbooks).

There is a difference between one persons account and a video camera's account of what happened though. Police won't do anything because in order to prosecute they need more than circumstantial evidence.
