You need to convert them (into ALAC) using FLACTunes (Mac App Store) or XLD (free), for example.

Take a look at www.computeraudiophile.com and you will find mention of a few ( quite expensive ) programs that can be added to iTunes but you may find that iTunes is simply not worth it . There are other ways to play flac such as Vlc , JRiver Media Centre or Vox .

Apple have been disappointing with regard to audio and seem to concentrate their efforts on graphics/video mainly 🙁
