how difficult would this be? is it even possible? i don't mean to change anything (like change coloring of labels), but simply to add a new menu item.

You'd have to write a plugin for the Finder, but not in Cocoa. Last time I checked it wasn't exactly easy.

humm... ok... i was thinking it would be a fun little exercise to create a menu in the finder action to "show/hide hidden files"... i know there are lots of apps that do this, but they seem all window based... would be nice to have this built into the Finder instead.

perhaps this already exists and i just haven't found it yet?

I'm pretty sure an app like that exists. Did you try searching macupdate.com?

You might be interested in OnMyCommand.
