For those interested in adding wireless CarPlay to their vehicle on an aftermarket basis, Alpine today introduced its next-generation Halo receiver with an 11-inch capacitive touchscreen that hovers over the dashboard. Despite having such a large screen, the receiver has a single-DIN chassis, allowing it to be installed in a wide range of vehicles.

Alpine's previous Halo receiver was limited to wired CarPlay, but the new iLX-F511 model includes support for both wired and wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a higher-resolution 1280x720 display and high-resolution audio playback. The new receiver is also compatible with SiriusXM 360L, which offers both satellite radio and on-demand audio.

The screen can be tilted at four pre-set angles to better match the tilt and height of the dashboard, and other features of the receiver include hands-free Bluetooth phone calls outside of CarPlay, one HDMI input and output, one AUX input, two USB-A ports, rearview camera compatibility, iDatalink Maestro support, and more.

Alpine said the iLX-F511 will ship in February 2022 for a suggested price of $1,199.95 in the United States, and a smaller 9-inch iLX-F509 model will also be available for a suggested price of $999.95. Both units will be available at select car audio retailers.

It’s 2022. I don’t understand the target market of aftermarket entertainment units especially with manufacturers being required to include screens due to (upcoming) reverse camera requirements.
That’s because there really isn’t a ‘target demographic’ for $1200 units. I’m not chastising the functionality of what Alpine is offering, but are average consumers really spending this type of money on a 2014 Subaru for example? I doubt it. They probably would rather just trade in/upgrade to a vehicle that actually offers built-in CarPlay when that time happens. If you think about the cost of this unit and what it cost to have installed, that’s a pretty hefty investment, which if I were to buy something like this, I would be thinking logically, how long does one plan on keeping their vehicle?

As someone in the market for a CarPlay option for my 2018 Corolla, this intrigues me. I don't need it to be a wireless option, but I would like something to this effect...

I'd rather spend half the money on an appropriately sized iPad dedicated for the car, with the audio all going over BlueTooth or into an AUX input. What I do like about Carplay is that it's shining a light on the 24-carat dogcrap infotainment GUIs that just about every single car manufacturer has.

It blows my mind that I can buy a 4K 50” TV for 300 bucks but an 11” 720p screen for a car is $1200…
Especially considering how many "Smart" TV's there are.

As for wireless, cool, but I hear that it's a big power draw. Since my car doesn't have a Qi charger, I might as well hook it up via USB to get power & CarPlay.

Added wireless CarPlay with a chincy USB adapter from Amazon. Actually works great 99% of the time. ??‍♂️

Which one for wireless? I'm interested, but don't really trust those devices.

As for aftermarket, it's good for anyone who buys a used car older than around 2018, which represents maybe 95% of this market. Apple CarPlay took a looooong time to be included in new cars on purchase, and even Toyota alone, the biggest carmaker, were amongst the last to adopt it.

Get an Android head unit that’s custom fit for your car. I got for my 2010 corolla for $300 and couldn’t be happier.

What car manufacturer is NOT shipping Carplay as their GUI?
Subaru, Honda, Toyota, Benz, Volvo, GMC, I haven't been in a car without it in quite awhile.

But it’s a $1000. That’s like 5% of your cost when your car was new. Your car is now four years old so it has depreciated considerably. So now it’s at least a 10% of your actual worth of your car and that’s without installation costs etc.

This is a DOA unit imho. Too expensive and too niche. IMHO anything over $300 is not going to sell nowadays. If this was 1999 sure but not in 2022.

Was like $125 and works most of the time. Only time it doesn’t work well is if I get out of the car and return to the car almost immediately. Have to reset the adapter.

I agree, the price is not something I'd ever consider. Last year I looked around for a unit, and found a few for $250-350, but turn them down when installation not only doubled the price (expected), but they also had to push the date of the installation back a few months.

An iPad mini Wifi + Cellular is about half the price and you can carry the iPad with you.

That’s crazy for installation. I remember I paid like $50 for an installation of Sony xplod w speakers in 1999. Of course at that time many people bought aftermarket units and many installed them. The best thing about aftermarket units becoming uncommon nowadays is that theft and breaking in of cars to steal said receivers is now rare.

No one buys a high-end deck like this and plans on leaving it in their car when it's sold.

I have a much older car than the person you were responding to - an '08 Civic. However, it still runs perfectly fine with low maintenance costs, and thus I have no plans to replace it anytime soon. Why not put an extra few hundred into the car to maximize my enjoyment of the car for the rest of the time I'm going to have the car?

Yeah, because THAT'S a good idea... messing around with an iPad while you're driving.

Depends on where you go I guess. Best Buy does installs for free if you buy the deck from them. I was going to do this with the Pioneer I put in my Jeep last month, but it was going to be 6 weeks so I did it myself.

I think they mean the default display when NOT using CarPlay

I think it would be cool (to at least SOME people anyways) if these infotainment systems could hook up to the ODB system so it could show car diagnostic info.
