I think it would be cool (to at least SOME people anyways) if these infotainment systems could hook up to the ODB system so it could show car diagnostic info.
100% agree. Would be nice if an iPad had some app that could read the car info. Then you could build some custom Din Mount to make your car have an iPad screen. Would be awesome!

No one buys a high-end deck like this and plans on leaving it in their car
How would you know that? Do they have hope of selling it used? How do you know they wouldn’t sell/include it in the previous vehicle if the new owner wants it? My point is, you can’t make a definitive statement, not knowing what various owners do. It’s variable.

I’d also safely assume that if the new-er vehicle the owner upgrades to has CarPlay, then they might include this in a used vehicle as a selling point.

And someone should invent a way to use an iPad for CarPlay. For $1200 you could have a freaking 12” M1 iPad in your car.
You can. I have. Its great.
Some info for your journey:
- You need a Mounting Solution for the iPad - I use the Mountek nGroove, it fits in your cd slot and comes with magnets strong enough for a mini and can hold an iPad Pro with dual or triple magnets.
- Search r/jailbreak on Reddit and you will find many options for what you want to do.

You can also avoid jailbreaking your device, and just tether your iPad to your phone, and if you have a cellular iPad even use your phones data to load maps/waze/gmaps etc.

Tethering is really a must-have for me though, unless you actively pay for a data plan on the iPad. I recommend getting a tethering package from your carrier, instead of a data plan strictly for the ipad. Turn a VPN on your phone and iPad and bam... Connectivity, limited data usage (under 22GB of tethered data every month for me and i use waze/spotify/over 2 hrs every commute/everyday) and a seamless notification experience. The nice thing about tethering is that you can take phone calls / texts / facetime / and you dont have to worry about carplay locking you out of certain apps on your dash.

Good luck, and enjoy!

I used to have an OBD plug-in from Automatic that would connect via BT to an app on my phone. It would tell me what the check engine light was for, etc. Fortunately, never really needed it. Unfortunately, Automatic shut down a while ago.

Already exists. I have a Bluetooth OBD reader I plug in and then run an app on my iPhone or iPad and I have the instantaneous gas mileage, diagnostics, etc.

Edit: Just looked it up. The app is called OBD Fusion. I’m not sure of the name of the hardware.

Eh, I don't have an M1 iPad, but I've got the next best thing.

That’s awesome! Through jailbreaking, can you get the CarPlay app to work? Also is it wireless?

That’s awesome, can it load other things like AC controls?

For some folks like me don't have the luxury to have newer cars with Carplay. All my cars are over 8 years old and even my 2016 Lexus doesnt have Carplay.

Using an IPAD is not an option. Tried it and the screen is not bright enough even with the latest m1 Ipad.

Bought a $200 wireless Carplay 10" Double-din and it works perfect. Installed it on all of my older cars with no issues. Even installed the backup camera. Yes all of my car except the Lexus does not have backup cameras. For those people with carplay my car has to start/stop the engine with a mechanical key. One of my millennial coworker called me that the key was stuck on our company vehicle. Told him it was on accessary and to turn one more click back to take the key out.

Single DIN seem to be much rarer these days, with double DIN becoming the more common in a change from 10+ years ago.

Yes. There are several apps that can do this over the last 5 years or so. Depending on your firmware and iOS version you will need to find a solution that works. I used CarBridge on an iPad Mini 4 like 2-3 years ago on iOS12.2-12.8 (i think ?) YouTube and Reddit will serve you well. Just make sure you are mindful of the apps you install, and remember nothing is "FREE & EASY" people on youtube/reddit claiming you can get certain apps/utilities without a jailbreak are definitely preying on you, and installing malware on your device, and wasting your time. I prefer the unc0ver jb tool/process.

ALSO: If you have a AUDI or VW (it works for other makes too, but not as deeply) I recommend OBDeleven as a way to customize/monitor your vehicles ECU functions/safety and can display a ton of info on the ipad/iphone ?

I've been using my iPhone thus far for quite some time and it's totally bright enough. Are you driving a convertable top-down through the desert or something?
The NITS on an Iphone is brighter than an Ipad. If you put an Iphone 12 pro Max vs an Ipad at full brightness under the sun the Iphone is much easier to view. Put on some sunglasses and the Ipad is very dark while the iphone is still manageable.

Another note that in the hot summer months in Southern California my Ipad wont turn on at all because the car interior got too warm. My $200 wireless Carplay is able to turn on.

You made quite the definitive statement in your original post. The weak qualifier of "really no" doesn't change the statement much.

As someone who has recently moved CarPlay units between vehicles, it's obvious that you hadn't considered that possibility in your original post. Nor had you considered your new position that it would help with resale. Both concepts undermine your original assumption honestly. The market for a $1200 head unit may be relatively small, but it's also obviously there if Alpine continues to make products for it...

Added wireless CarPlay with a chincy USB adapter from Amazon. Actually works great 99% of the time. ??‍♂️

It’s 2022. I don’t understand the target market of aftermarket entertainment units especially with manufacturers being required to include screens and backup cameras due to new regulations from 2018.
Classic cars I have a 1965 Ford Mustang I added CarPlay to I know people who still daily drive classics that still want some modern touches.

Fun fact: single DIN units fit in double DIN spaces, plus you can add a pocket! In the case of this unit, it would also give you two options for screen height.

It blows my mind that I can buy a 4K 50” TV for 300 bucks but an 11” 720p screen for a car is $1200…
TVs are heavily subsidized by data mining I would imagine 3/4ths end of online and its a ton of data they even send screenshots from connected devices etc. NextDNS (PiHole equivalent) really woke me up to what mine was doing and pushed me into buying an Apple TV.

This is another issue I ran into myself, where I was using an iPad mini first gen in my car, just directly connected to the built-in stereo. I'd love to just reuse the old tech I have, but it's simply not an option during the Summer.

Still a ton of vehicles on the road with crappy car stereos. Especially older trucks like mine. There’s also lots of “older” luxury cars that you can get for cheap now as well.

I've contemplated replacing the stock head unit in my 2015 Kia Optima. Its an LX model and has a tiny screen, but an amazingly clear backup camera. I just wish the screen was larger. I love Alpine products, but I wouldnt spend over $1k on this.

I'd expect more from a $1200 product. 1280x720 is horrendous. With the cost of LED panels these days, this is not acceptable. Does it come with super mario brothers and duck hunt?

This could work. But people don't need more distractions in their vehicles. But, cool...

Yeah, Alpine stuff works great. I had a 10 disc changer for a car I had years ago, and it really almost never skipped. I was blown away with how stable it was. The stock changer in the wife's car skipped if you sneezed.

ODB isn't as useful, or romantic as it seems, from what I have heard of it. It's pretty primitive, but if it's massaged well enough, might be, but do people really need constant access to that info? *shrug*

And for just $100 more you can get an iMac. I will never understand how theses companies stay in business charging so much for such outdated technology. You can't tell me that the radio tuner and amplifiers cost that much. If Apple just enabled CarPlay to be used on the phone itself while docked in a car, it would be a game changer. Especially with a MagSafe dash mount.
