I work for a faith-based addiction program that has an 82% success right amongst people that complete our residential discipleship program. I work with people addicted to cocaine, heroin, meth, crack, weed, alcohol, porn, uppers, downers, Rx, and so much more.

Anyways, I was just curious as to what your thoughts are on addiction and how it can be prevented/treated/etc?

Not a hard drug addiction but if I ever find myself doing too much of something (working, gaming, internet, caffeine) then I just go cold turkey and do something else for a bit. Doing something that disrupts a few days in a row usually helps, like visiting the girlfriend or going away for a short break abroad.

If I get addicted to something, usually I just give in for a day or two and then I tend to give it up.

Probably not the ideal way of getting over addiction but it works for me.

I love coffee, kind of addicted. Not planning to do anything about my Caramel Correto addiction, or my extra-hot venti 5-pump french vanilla with hazelnut double-shot latte with extra foam, no foam, and whipping cream (NOT whipped) addiction.

Thoughts on addiction? It's sad and can be devastating to those that get caught in its web. But of course you already know this since you work in the field. As far as how to prevent addiction, well, that's a pretty individualized question since not everyone gets into addiction the same way and multiple individual characteristics including genetics/heredity play into it. Treatment must be individualized as well since there's no "one size fits all" cure.

Kudos for working with this population. It's one of the most challenging areas and unfortunately carries with it a high burn out rate for professionals and staff.

I eat the chocolate as quickly as possible so that it runs out. After they're gone, I go cold turkey.

I don't have any drug addictions, but the ones I do have usually come in alternating phases, probably to convince myself that they really aren't addictions at all.

So I deal, by trading one for another.

Chocolate followed by turkey seems an unpleasant combination. Wouldn't it be better the other way round?

I honestly think the only way to beat addiction is to take control of ones own life and change it.

The only way to get rid of an addiction to replace it with another. I've tried to give up my addiction to diet colas, but I'd have to replace it with alcohol. I think I'll stick to cola. lol

In order to deal with my opiate addiction, I moved to South Korea. No joke. Even here, I struggle with it.

I got a sinus infection a few months ago, and was given codeine for my cough, and it set me off again. Luckily you can't get that stuff on the street over here. I kept going back to him complaining of a cough...

For me, the addiction never really ended, I just removed myself from the situation where I was able to supply myself.

    Stop banking on the future.

I cringe when I hear people say "I'm going to quit when....." it never works.

I'm fairly happy with my habits, I don't drink or smoke and addictive drugs have never appealed to me, as a rule of thumb I won't touch anything that I wouldn't be comfortable doing on a regular basis. I've seen too many friends form bad habits after "just trying" nasty drugs.

Also: on a personal note I find I have far less of a desire to indulge in more hedonistic things if i'm working hard at something I enjoy, for example over the last few months I've done a tons of maths work in preparation for returning to university and I've felt entirely fulfilled purely from that.

Rotate the bad things in life so you try to never do anymore then one at any one time. (Perhaps that is just a hiatus rather then getting over it then!)

My new addiction: I have been having one McDonald's ice-cream corn (cone:p) EVERY SINGLE DAY for past TWO WEEKS. I am not obese or anything, but I just can't live a day without that ice-cream corn these days. Am I sick?
