So my wife does not know it yet but she recently upgraded her Blackberry Curve to a 4s (Even Android fanboys have to admit that is a good move! :D). She has a nice Macbook 13" laptop that she uses, but we only use one Apple Account with the App Store on both my iMac and her Macbook.

Does that impact her activating an iPhone at all? We she need her own Apple Account for it? Does this impact how iMessages works?

Thanks!

she really needs her own apple id. it'll make life much easier in the end, however if you like you can still share purchases by signing into the account the purchases were made under the "store" tab in settings.

You can use the same iTunes Apple ID, then different iCloud IDs, so her contacts and such are separate. Then use the store settings, as the above poster mentioned to control installs of purchased items.

Ah so she can use a different id in the store form the rest of the phone? Was not aware of that, that should work around it nicely.

Yup. That's how my wife and I have ours setup and it works perfectly. We share the apple ID for the store so we can share purchases and I use the same ID for my iCloud stuff and then I made her a separate one for her iCloud stuff. Works great.
