I believe you need to do it in your Address Book application instead of iCal, which I know seems mad at first! If you add the person to Address Book whos birthday you want to add, and then add their birthday, it should then show up in Address Book. :)

But you must first enable it in ical go into the preferences in the general it is a check box.

I know this is an old thread so thought this may have changed.

But is this still the only way? So i have to create a contact for my sisters baby who has no phone number just so i can add her birthday to iCal ?

Well you could just create a repeating event. That automatically repeats once a year.

There's nothing preventing you from making a calendar for birthdays and manually adding them, but the built in birthdays calendar displays birthdays from people in your Address Book. So you can add her birthday to the calendar without going through Address Book, but you can't add it to the built in birthdays calendar.

The nice thing about the birthday calendar is it tells you the age
