My family already has a family plan in place and they each pay $50 a month. Can I add an iPhone to the plan? If so, would I have to add a data plan for $30?

If you use the upgrade method to get a new 3G iPhone you may need to change your plan. If the current family plan you have is no longer offered you'll have to change. If the current plan is still offered I believe all you need to do is renew the contract with the data plan added in.

I've had the same family plan for the past three years, and just had them tack on $30/month for the iPhone 3G data plan. I don't think my current family plan exists anymore - at least it's not on their website.

I was told this by the ATT store here in Sacramento.

It can be added to your existing family plan, if you do the following (this is assuming you're adding it to the primary phone in your family plan):

1) make a non-iPhone number in your plan the primary number (if your name is not on that non-iPhone number, bring in the person whose name is on it). This way, your iPhone is now a secondary phone in your plan.

2) add the iPhone to your family plan. Now that the non-iPhone number is primary, your family plan stays unchanged.

3) Upgrade/activation fees still apply. Pay them.

After that, you're all set.

is there anyway not to have the data plan? I dont even have 3G in my area, and im around wifi networks most of the time anyways...

Unfortunately, no. The data plan is included in the overall plan, so it's there, regardless.

However, my latest trip to the ATT store did give me this...

Apparently, ATT has updated their policies/system regarding the family plan. You now can have the iPhone on your primary number, and it will not invalidate/change your family plan. So now, you have this:

1) Go to your local ATT store.

2) add the iPhone to your family plan (regardless of if on the primary or secondary number).

3) pay the $30 for the data plan (required) and activation/upgrade fee (if applicable).

4) walk out of ATT store with iPhone on family plan.

All set.

According to AT&T the answer is NO and you agree to this when you sign the signature pad.

Here are the AT&T Terms and Conditions for the iPhone or iPHONE as AT&T posted. Here is the relevent section.

Data Plans: An eligible data plan for iPhone is required. This data plan covers data usage in the U.S. and does not cover international data usage and charges. If it is determined that you are using iPhone without an eligible data plan, AT&T reserves the right to add an eligible data plan to your account and bill you the appropriate monthly fee.

Well that kinda sucks, but oh well. Now onto actually GETTING the iPhone...

I think you CAN cancel the data plan, I remember reading a post about someone who canceled it because they were in a WiFi environment almost all the time.
