I am about to add two additional monitors to my 21.5" iMac. I searched the net for methods of doing this and came across this blog post:

http://brianwong.com/blog/improve-productivity-3-monitors-imac/

The Kworld adaptors look like the way to go, being most cost effective, and two 1920 x 1080 screens.

Has anyone got any experience with setting up additional monitors, and are there any pitfalls or problems that need to be overcome?

Be very interested to hear other users experiences in setting up multiple monitors, and any recommendations you might have.

Success-2 ext monitors

I run 2 external monitors on my 21.5 iMac. I have one DVI to VGA adapter (Apple off-brand) and one of these bad boys http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/VIDU2DVIA/ I found that the OWC adapter sometimes makes the screen digitize upon waking from sleep mode, but by shaking around an open window, you can "erase" the weird digitizing. I think my weird digitizing may be caused by a high-res setting on my stone-age 18 inch VGA screens. I would highly suggest getting high-res screens; I have heard good things about Dell monitors. All in all, I can confirm that I feel a huge productivity boost since adding the screens. Good luck with your project, I hope this helps. :D

Ok, up and running perfectly. Just in case someone else wants to do this on a system running Lion, this is what I did:

  1. Bought two KWorld 1920 Converters
  2. Bought two 21" Samsung monitors
  3. Installed this DisplayLink® USB driver
  4. Connected the monitors to the KWorld converters
  5. Plugged the converters into two USB ports in the iMac
  6. Configured the monitors using System Preferences > Displays
Needed to shuffle the arrangement around a bit to get them working one either side and the mouse to move across in a straight line, but this was extremely simple.

I have the external monitors set at 1920 x 1080 resolution with a 60 Hertz refresh rate.

Hope this helps.
