Adding Subtitles.

Is there an easy way to add subtitles to Avi files for free. I just need to add them to the actual file rather than watch the film in VLC or anything like that and i have not come across an easy free way of doing this.

I'm pretty sure you can do it in iMovie.

Do you have any idea how to do this as i tried this but am unsure how to import the .srt file into iMovie.
I have both iMovie 08 and 06 if that helps.
