Page viewing and server load shouldn't be too much worse, since 'tars are usually stored in the browser's cache and aren't frequently changed. So for 56K-ers would only feel the [Added] pain the first time the 'tar has to be downloaded.

And broadband has become much more common too :)

Mitthrawnuruodo, is that you in your 'tar?

You're hot.
Needed to get rid of some virtual aggression... :D

Still think the resemblance is bigger to my regular South Park-ish 'tar, though... ;)

Mitthrawnuruodo....best...avatar...evar! :D

Now I feel like I want a Fraggle Rock avatar. :)
Thanks... Had to go with my favorite Muppet... :) he's also a bit more "alive" than these two candidates (that might suit my normal personality a bit better (;))):

You were thinking about having Mad Jew and Shard as your avatar? ;) :D

Neither of them is mad jew - they both have shirts on. ;)

I wouldn't mind it, but something tells me the lack of MR control over the content wouldn't fly. Still, if you could (a) enforce dimensions; and (b) allow mods to shut off 'tars easily [must be simple to do], I'd be in favor of it.

Gosh, I must have missed that. My deepest apologies. I think having the option to host your own 'tar is a capital idea, rendezvouscp. In fact I think it's the best solution to the question posed by this thread.

Hey I resent that. I wear clothes. You wanna fight this over? Come on, into the mud pit. We'd better take our tops of so they don't get dirty though...

So, any final word on the size bump? :)

I also like the user hosted 'tars idea, but whatever is easier on the Gods/mods...

I'm kind of surprised no one has mentioned it, but why not just give people the option of hosting their own 'tars?

There are two sides to bandwidth though. Just because I'm hosting it doesn't mean I should be able to have a 20x20 lord of the rings animated gif marathon as my 'tar. That would be highly annoying to download. One part is server space/bandwidth and the other is making the forums load for people on slower connections.

Also when you start having 'tars on different servers pages tend to load slower because sometimes 1 'tar will come from a slower server. This gives the overall impression that Macrumors is a slow site.

The tar size is fine I think.

Nothing is ever final, but there's no enthusiasm in the back room for increasing avatar sizes. No matter how big they are, some people will want them bigger (in pixels and in bytes).

They are not limited in order to conserve disk space. They are limited in order to conserve downloading time for people viewing the forum pages and to avoid cluttering too much of the page with graphics. Now that there are so many avatar'ed members, this is even more important. This is also why hosted avatars aren't welcome, for the reasons SilentPanda explained.

Nah... I probably wouldn't get the 140.6KB I really need, anyway... ;)

Going from 20 to 25 doesn't seem worthwhile...
If that is a 5kb increase from your current tar to the posted tar, then I would say it is a significant increase!

EDIT- Never mind, just checked the size as well as reread your post. I would need 180kb size increase.

No, no, no... my current tar is 19.5KB:

attachment.php

The "original", which I posted earlier in this thread, is 140.6KB, and looks a bit better:

attachment.php

So going from 19.5 to ~25 wouldn't help much, in this case, I would still be ~115KB short... ;)

Edit: ...just like you figured out yourself in a much shorter time than it took me to answer... ;)

Says the guy with the 100x100 avatar... :D ;)

Just giving you a hard time Q; no offense intended. I'm fine with the current limits.

Well, there goes my request for HD H.264 'tars. ;)

Thank you for the reply. At some future point (read:"when Safari natively supports SVG"), I'll likely ask for SVG support again. It would seem to fit within the constraints - no increase in bandwidth, no increase in size.

Teasing graciously accepted. Actually, I think the mod tars, including mine, sometimes stick out like a sore thumb. But the "sticking out" is on purpose, because we want them to help people identify us. Of course, we could make a standard mod/admin avatar and have the entire "staff" use it, but we want to be individuals too!

IPB can enforce size restrictions on outside hosted avatars. And since IPB and vB are usually very similar in capabilities, perhaps vB has this too?

Could the tars be bumped to say 80x80, that seems to be more a standard size.

You could save some space by shortening the animation... but, it's still hard to make it look good at >19.5KB... ;)
Yeah, but that would leave out the crucial part where she gapes open her mouth and gets suggestive with the mic.
