Any way to put a trash thing there next to Desktop? I don't really like using the dock and I end up dragging a lot of items to either trash or desktop from finder. It would be convinient if they were next to each other.

It can be done by browsing to the hidden trash file and adding it to the Sidebar, but it's less than ideal...it doesn't have the trash bin icon (though you could add it), and the icon doesn't switch when you put something in it.

But here's another way you can do it that you may not know about. In a Finder window, control-click or right click on the toolbar portion and select "Customize Toolbar..." In there you'll see an option to add a "Delete" button to the Toolbar.

Get a utility like... mainmenu and turn on the finder "show invisible items". Then in your home folder (whatever your short name is in the users folder) find a folder called .Trash (should be a ghost like folder icon) and drag it into the sidebar. Then use mainmenu again and rehide invisible items. The trash folder will stay in the sidebar but will have to remain being called .Trash.

However I would do what do what WildCowboy says and just use the delete button in the toolbar.

Hmm... this'll work

I actually used to have that up there but I guess I forgot about it. Not exactly what I was looking for but definitely usable. Thanks. :D

EDIT - that was to WildCowboy. Ben, I'll look in to what you offered but the delete key should work fine. Thanks for the quick responses though!

You don't really need a third party utility to find the Trash folder (although they are nice utilities). In Finder, just hit shift-command-G to bring up the "Go to Folder..." window. Type "~/,Trash" (without the quotes) into the box and your trash folder will appear in Finder. You can then drag it to the Sidebar. But note that if you delete things by dragging them to the Sidebar Trash, the trash bin in your dock won't switch to the "filled" bin and you can't empty the trash. It's less than ideal.

What I have is a delete button at the top of my finder window. I always find this useful, because you dont have to empty your trash if you use this.

You can add this button by right clicking on the toolbar, then select 'customize toolbar', and the rest is self explainatory.

Cheers,

Tom

Not that it really matters (becuase I just put the delete button back on top) but the "~/,Trash" file, without quotes, didn't work for me. It said no folder could be found.

Oh crud...damn typos. It should be "~/.Trash"

Period, not a comma.

Ugh.
