I am adding a Yosemite to an existing all-Mac network that is running an existing Server (Snow Leopard) on an Xserve. Now that I am adding the new one, is there a strategy for helping them to coexist? Here is what I have...

Xserve running Snow Leopard (won't upgrade to Mavericks or Yosemite)
    Airport Extreme
Mac Mini now running Yosemite Server

It would help if I could run both Servers on the network for now. Both of them run great by themselves. What do I need to do to combine them? I will take out the old Server, but have a couple reasons I need to leave it be for a couple weeks. I have DNS running on both, but assume I need to turn it off on the older one?

Thank you for any help. This forum has already been a lifesaver!

What roles will your server be performing, and what is the existing one doing?

The existing server is simply a file server with Time Machine backup. The new one I am setting up with more services like VPN, Contacts Sharing, etc.

If your existing server is only running File Sharing and Time Machine, and not services like DHCP, there won't be any conflict with another server.

    Hi there, whardy7 -
Are you at all opposed to upgrading your Xserve to Yosemite? I recently installed Yosemite on my 1,1 (06 Intel Xserve) using the Piker-Alpha method. Simply requires another GPU and a bit of trickery in creating the installer. If you have a spare PCIe slot (that's not occupied by a RAID card or a Fibre Card) it's definitely a great upgrade.

I didn't realize that was an option or I would have definitely considered it. I'm probably too far into the Mini to go back now. If I decided to keep the Xserve for some reason, I might choose to go that route as a second or separate server.

    Thanks for the info...
