Additional Hard Drives for Mac Pro

Can the Mac Pro take any type of SATA HD or is it restricted to "special" types?

Anything SATA II. This isn't 1994.

If you're looking to buy the computer itself, don't now.

Mine came with a 320GB Seagate, I've installed a 500GB WD Green and 2 1TB Samsung F1.

You could probably build one out of spare pinball machine parts (and end up in 1955) but as long as it has a SATA plug you're good.
