Address book problem - Also can you download Address book?

Hello,

Once more it looks like I'm banging my head against a Network User problem.

One of our staff members has had the same problem with Apple Address Book app 10+ times over the past month or so.

When manually typing in new contacts, the application suddently claims to have no contacts and them promptly quits.

We've tried everything obvious, deleting cache files, preferences, application support files, etc...

We've exported the data in a few ways, "Backup address book.." "export contacts a vCards"..
I've loaded these backups into other peoples address books and they work fine.
All permissions are repaired and the machine is otherwise fine (except a few contant niggles caused by the network user accounts system.. grr)

So, any ideas? Failing that do you know if you can download the Address book app anywhere? I've searched the Apple site to no joy and trying to extract it from the install disk is just not happening either.

Pacifist will help you extract it from the OSX discs, if necessary. What other apps are running on this machine when Address Book quits? Do the crash logs point out anything obvious?

Hi, thanks for replying.

I managed to install direct from the Tiger disk, was wary of doing it because you obviously cannot tell it not to install safari, mail etc.. and this was on the bosses PA's machine, so losing mail preferences etc.. was not an option.
Turned out fine though.

as for programs running, it seems to be fairly arbitrary in the way it goes under.
She on average, will be running safari, mail, word, filemaker and a few other general purpose apps. Nothing too resource intensive.

As for log files, Console doesn't record then in the home directory and if they're saved in the system directory she doesn't have access to this on the network user account system (which is dreadful IMO).

The 'send to Apple' report box does pop up but I've not had a chance to look at this yet because she's always clicked reopen by the time she calls me over!
I've asked to see it next time.

I'll see how it goes this time.. I did notice that the last backup she saved from it before it crashed last time was corrupt, as in it wouldn't open at all. So I've told her to export each group as a vCard for now, trashed all preferences and then reimported the vCards in case there is something corrupted in the back up file. The vCards are pretty much just text files so for some reason I trust them a whole lot more.

There is a way to just install the Address book, or Safari or Mail without installing all of them. An Optional Install in 10.4 is the answer.

Hello.

It's just crashed again, this time I got the crash report. These things baffle me most of the time.

Please note that despite the fact it created a crash report, it didn't actually close the application. It just wiped the entire address book of contacts and remained open listing 2 contacts. The local user and the default Apple one.

Okay, does your boss have Plaxo installed? I have no experience with this app/plugin but it looks like it might be causing the trouble. It's the only third party component in the crashed thread, so it's probably a good place to start.

Yes Plaxo is installed but it had only gone on Friday last week whereas the crashes have been happening for the last month or so. For that reason I have disregarded Plaxo.

sorry should have noted that with the crash report.

Thanks for looking over it though.

Looks like I'll have to go with the exporting each address book as a vCard option. In case it's a corruption in the backup file that's doing it. I had suggested that this was done but they didn't do it. Looks like the next logical step to me.
