I got my girlfriends old Mac book pro before she went back to finish her senior year of collage. She has no idea what her admin password is and hasn't used the computer for a couple of years now. i would like to keep everything as is just over ride the admin password so i can update the software. I don't really want to go down to the mac store and pay $180 to have this done. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Turn off your Mac (choose Apple > Shut Down).
Press the power button while holding down Command-R. The Mac will boot into Recovery mode. ...
Select Disk Utility and press Continue.
Choose Utilities > Terminal.
Enter resetpassword (all one word, lowercase letters) and press Return.

Is it an Intel based MacBook?

If it is cmd r or cmd option r will boot to the recovery menu
