"Unfortunately, I got the following error message after about 240 GB:
'The backup task was aborted because the source filesystem is not responding.'"

I'm wondering if there are problems with the internal drive... not so much "speed"... but hardware-related.

Before going further, I would:
1. Boot from the INTERNAL drive
2. ERASE the external SSD (APFS with GUID partition format)
3. Open CCC and try cloning the internal drive one more time.

If you get the same error, perhaps another approach should be tried...

Most of the files appear to have copied over. When I open the app from the external drive (iPhoto) it is a little faster but not much.

Is there a way to confirm that the app and files are running from the external drive and not from the internal drive?

Click the Apple Menu and choose "about this mac..."
It should tell you the startup drive.

If you're booted from the external SSD, open the Applications folder and open iPhoto.
Now you know you're running the app from the SSD.

BUT...
Consider a couple of things...
How large is the iPhoto library?
and...
Remember that it was mentioned earlier that the 4gb of installed RAM (which cannot be upgraded in a 2014 Mini) was going to limit the overall performance no matter what you did...?

Thank you.

I now have the external drive attached to my macbook air, and I can view all the photos.

Do you have any suggestions for photo organization websites, or just the best way to get all the photos you have organized? I have hundreds of photos on different computers, linked to different apps. Any ideas, please?
