Yep. I only convert DVDs that I own and I never share them with anyone else. In fact, the other day I rented a DVD before leaving to go out of town. I was going to take it with me but I didn't have room in my stuff so I copied it to my iPod. I felt so guilty about doing it that I went out and bought the DVD after I came home! Just wanted to make sure that I didn't have an illegal copy...

Toolshed!

I own like 300 DVD's and to be honest it will take me forever to archive those!

My DVD collection is also about 300.

Actually, it will take 4 months. I used a Powermac G5 and it ran 24x7 for me doing only this kind of work. I added another machine during the last month to speed up the process. It was very painful to backup DVD movies into h.264 at full resolution.

It felt like forever.

Is there really anything wrong with doing that? I have about 10 of my favorite movies on my iPod, a couple hit tv shows (like 24), and I even have old nick tv shows that I recoded off TV!

I dont see anything wrong. It isnt like you are distributing them to others.

exactly. i mean, when you rip an audio cd onto your ipod for personal use, that is entirely legal. so why should it be any different for dvds? i would think the money you spend on music and movies is more going towards the content itself than the actual medium. if i paid for the content, i should be able to view and enjoy it in whatever manner i see fit, provided i stay within the realm of personal (non-commercial) use.

Addicted and I love it!

I have the entire 119 episodes of a series that shall remain nameless for fear of ridicule, all 29 Girl from UNCLE's and a good few other films and random tv shows. I watch it to work and back on the train and am totally obsessed with it. My only problem is that they seriously eat up storage space.

It's coming with me to Israel for work and saves me having the bring loads of dvds to while away the long lonely evenings! :)

There wouldn't be any reason to. I have heard that some laserdiscs do achieve very high quality (especially for their time), but many are also prone to delamination and rot, like cheap CD-Rs.

I've heard of laserdisc-drives for computers, but don't know much about them. The CD-ROM out-competed the laserdisc for computer use in every way but capacity, so it never caught on.
Can you imagine a laserdisc player built into a computer!!??

I dont rip movies! I archive them and back them up to iPod. :D

I always thought it'd be fun to have a VHS player in a PC. You'd have to load them sideways to fit into the 5 1/4" slot but... well... honestly I don't even know if they'd fit then but I always thought somebody should've made one.

I just uploaded "The Pirates of Silicon Valley," "Waking Life," and DJ QBert's "Wave Twisters," onto my iPod last night. Ready for a long road trip tomorrow. Happy indeed.

i have a few funny videos from break.com, google video, and a few series that i am still in the process of burning. i cant bear watching long films on such a small screen; short, half hour episodes are best.

i have:

the thin blue line series 1

will have:

american dad
extras
the thin blue line series 2

i may put some others on there, but TBH i dont really watch that many. its mainly for music.

i dont think i would go online and tell the world i ripped Bewitched to my ipod like the OP did....

No videos on my ipod. I think its too small of a screen, and dont like watching a movie unless i can REALLY watch it, as in, with 5.1 or better, large screen, not on a bus or subway....

Over 1000 commercial DVDs at home, probably 100 or so ripped on my PB though for long flights.

1.Phantom of the Opera
2.RENT
3.Fun With Dick and Jane
4.Life of Brian
5.'O Brother, Where Art Thou?

All ripped perfectly with HandBrake... Excellent quality!

I have seasons 1 and 2 of the HBO show Deadwood on my iPod (possibly the best tv show I have ever watched) and the old school, late 70's The Hobbit and Return of the King animated movies.

:)

43-Minute Entertainment Wonder

I just finished encoding my 620th TV episode. Nothing is better than sitting at an airport watching everyone else staring into space while you watch X-Files in your hand. Nice!

Do we as a society need to be watching TV absolutely everywhere?

I have a video iPod and there's really not much point in watching a 2 hour movie on the tiny screen. I can see people watching television shows if they had a long commute, but back again to my original question.

If you're stuck on a train for three hours a day with people who glare at you if you accidentally make eye contact and it's too noisy to read a book then yes, watching videos on an iPod is a great thing to be able to do.

I haven't really the concentration levels for films anyway but 45 min TV shows are perfect. :)
