Google subsidiary AdMob today announced the release of a revised iPhone OS SDK bringing new ad formats that will allow customized delivery to the iPad.
Our new SDK is unified across all devices running the iPhone OS, which means that developers can download one binary for development across all Apple iPhone OS devices - iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. AdMob's unified iPhone SDK makes it easier for developers to quickly integrate our code and start monetizing their applications.

The new SDK supports two ad formats in native iPad applications: text & tile ads and image ads. Both of these ad formats are available in the three IAB standard ad sizes: 300×250, 728×90, and 468×60.
AdMob notes that it is already working with advertisers on the new platform, with Amazon rolling out a Kindle ad campaign tailored for the iPad. Publishers and advertisers can access the new SDK through their online AdMob accounts.

Despite the fact that today's release is limited to "text & tile" and image ads for the iPad, AdMob has also posted a demo showing how HTML5 tools will in the future enable more engaging user experiences in advertising on the iPad.

Looking forward to seeing how Mobile Advertising morphs moving forward. We'll likely get some insight into iAd next week at WWDC.

Let me start by saying advertising annoys me, I recognise the need for it and I am willing to live with it if, and it's really all about this if, if this brings us discounted or free apps where the developers make their income from these iAds (wow, the iPads autocorrect for iAds is really unfortunate!). If I pay what I would consider 'full price' for an app I expect it ad free.

Hopefully we will see two kinds emerge for a single app:

1) Ad supported, free or at a low price. Could replace the demo?
2) Add free full price apps

Oh and not too intrusive, keep it to menus and pause screens but never ever in live gameplay etc

Ad Bandwidth?

How would the pushing of these adds impact the new "capped" bandwidth changes that are now on the horizon?

Hopefully they are negligible, otherwise we will be paying for ads we do not want to see.

Ads are a bad idea; Apple should stop whoring itself to the marketing industry. They've got a good thing going, when is enough enough? How many people actually enjoy ads interrupting their TV show or movie? Thats why I'm getting away from cable and starting to watch shows via DVD more & more. Having an ad banner on a free forum/website like this makes sense and I have no problem w/ that. Having ads stream into aps is intrusive. I for one would much rather just pay for the aps I want and leave it at that.

Are we not bombarded enough w/ advertisement images daily? Apple feels the need to put in effort to increase this??? Not happy about this direction. Excessive advertisement does not have to be a fact of life.

I gotta say, I'm looking forward to iAd's implementation, because these flash-style animated tiles really piss me off. They are going to be a big disincentive for some users.

The solution isn't to shove ads in my face; it's to make them unintrusive, but with compelling enough content where I will want to click.

Grrrr.

I am really sick of ads. I look forward to jailbreaking my iPad to add in support for host ad-blocking. With a multi-touch surface, it is too easily to accidentally click on the ads, and the distraction is a nuisance.

Macrumors on an iPad is especially annoying. I appreciate the need to get revenue, but the ads seem excessive for an immersion experience.

so stupid -

Now with a 200MB/$15 cap, do you expect me to say it's OK? I will not pay for ads - especially when I have to pay for my own bandwidth that is LIMITED.

Those two kinds emerged at the very dawn of the app store, and have remained strong (and both very welcome) ever since. Nothing anyone has announced even begins to suggest the loss of either option.

Actually this article is about Google ads, not Apple, but a few questions:

1. What makes you certain Apple’s goal is to increase advertising? Advertising has always existed in apps. This is a better way to do something old, it’s not a new thing. What’s your evidence that Apple or Google wants more ads, rather than simply better ads? (And ads funneled through their own dev tools and revenue stream—although devs are free to use other kinds of ads still as well.)

2. How do you suggest paying for TV shows, games, etc. when people don’t want to pay directly?

3. Do you think everyone prefers—and is willing—to pay directly for TV shows, apps, etc.? Or do you think only some people prefer to pay directly? I like having the choice: sometimes I pay directly, sometimes by ads. And when I finally release an iPhone game, I’ll like having the choice then too. And I’ll like having Apple and Google competing! (Example: a game with a back-end server can charge you once, but the server costs money forever. Ad support could then make the game viable long-term.) What is to be gained be removing a choice iPhone users have always had?

so stupid -

Look at your data use stats—because those stats already include ads if you prefer ad-supported apps. Choose your next data plan accordingly, being aware that ads are small and that you’ll always have the option to pay for stuff directly instead of using ad-supported content. Any app that does not meet your needs, you should then not buy—and just like price and features, advertising is a factor in consumers’ choices. Neither Apple nor Google is stopping developers from following their users’ preferences in this matter. Meanwhile, if you already prefer to pay directly, nothing is changing anyway. You never bought ad-supported apps before and you won’t start now. (Or, if it’s that you’re used to unlimited, so ads never used to matter: you’re grandfathered in and that too won’t change, unless you choose one of the new cheaper options.)

Upgrade to the 2GB-plan. Not that big of a deal. :apple:

I'm OK with it so long as the App Store clearly discloses whether the application is ad supported or not.

right

Extra $10 + local, state, federal taxes add up, son.

I don't have a money tree in the backyard where I can pick off a few benjamins here and there.

I pay for the game. I don't want ads. Simple as that - if they put these stupid ads in a paid game, that's a big hell no.

I would think everyone who hates Flash and is looking forward to its ultimate demise would be absolutely thrilled to have annoying ads brought to them in anything as long it's not Flash (insert Star Wars evil empire music here).

And as long as it doesn’t burn battery like Flash.

Jobs has indicated that the idea of ads on the iDevices are ways for free app developers to get something in return for providing the app, not as a way for purchased apps to increase their revenue. Jobs also said that typical adds take you away from the experience you were having, and in the Apple ad experience that wouldn't happen. You need to be prepared for a different way of seeing advertisement with the iDevices that will be seamless to your experience rather then as you are now imagining and experiencing.

That said, I too feel bombarded with advertising and would rather not see them come to iDevices.

I can't speak for Google, but with Apple I understand the ad is in the app, not downloaded separately "upon demand." Keep in mind that some iPads and iPod Touches don't even have 3G capability.

Why are you stating the bleedin' obvious? Apps have been available in these two formats for almost two years now.

Well, at least this shouldn't matter to iPad users, since you have all that extra screen real estate to throw around. I guess the larger display is good for something....

So basically, when you're downloading a new app over 3G, you're getting the ads then, and effectively paying for them at that point. It makes no difference when you get the ads; the fact is, you're using up your capped bandwidth for ads now.

Not necessarily and probably not. They will probably be just a banner ad that links you to an interactive add that loads inside the app, instead of launching Safari. Webkit is built into the OS so they don't need to start Safari anyways. It is not in the interest of the advertisers to serve data that the user will never look at, just like it is not in your interest to pay for downloading ads that you don't want to view.
