Why would developers go with AdMob instead of Apple's platform once it is released? Doesn't Google charge less to advertisers and keep a bigger portion for itself?

Not necessarily and probably not. They will probably be just a banner ad that links you to an interactive add that loads inside the app, instead of launching Safari. Webkit is built into the OS so they don't need to start Safari anyways. It is not in the interest of the advertisers to serve data that the user will never look at, just like it is not in your interest to pay for downloading ads that you don't want to view.

This is not at all what I'm saying.

Ads have content. The videos, games, etc. that will be found in iAds will require more bandwidth than typical ads. So, there's two questions: 1. is this content downloaded onto your phone or streamed to it, and 2. will this take up part of your precious 2GB cap?

Ok.. I hate ads. Especially on a device that I paid for - $699 iPhone. To get bombarded with ads is going to be a joke. Now, if they keep those ads in FREE programs, that's fine by me. After all, they need to make money somehow right?

If they start putting that crap in PAID programs and in programs I use daily that come WITH my phone/iPad, then I will be pissed. Google already does this BS on Google maps for the iPhone. When you search, you get an extra pin that is an "advertisement" for a local place. While not bad, it's annoying.

Someone needs to snuff this little ember out before it turns into a roaring fire and by that time - nobody will be able to put out.

It's terrible and it hasn't even started.

Here - buy these products and we are going to advertise the **** out of other things on these expensive products we just sold you! Congratulations, you just bought a mobile billboard and YOUR PAYING FOR IT ALL THE WAY! MUHAHAHA.

Yeah - NO!

I don't understand your first question. If you want to view that ad and interact with it, you will click on it and a bunch of data will come to you. Whether it is downloaded or streamed at that point, it is still a data stream of some sorts. What difference does it make?

I presume if you initiate any data transfer even if it is for an ad, it would come out of your quota.

Despite the fact that today's release is limited to "text & tile" and image ads for the iPad, AdMob has also posted a demo showing how HTML5 tools will in the future enable more engaging user experiences in advertising on the iPad.

...demo ironically distributed in Flash format.

Not really, the majority of users will still be users on a real PC/Mac who will be using browsers that don't currently support HTML5. The fact that the iPad has an HTML5 browser is irreverent, the rest of the world didn't upgrade overnight!

Yeah which questions if Apple will be able to fill up their ad inventory.

Given how many apps are out there and the quality of a lot of them. I will say right now there is no way Apple will be able to fill that demand with the pricing they are talking about. It is not just no but hell no.

Also there will potentially be some requirements for apps for apple's program and perhaps some minimums.

I also am not convinced that many market segments get much out of advertising on mobile devices, especially the phones.

Don't download apps with ads in them.

Lots of people like the ad supported model because it provides a lot of value for little to no cost.

If you don't like that model, I am sure you can figure out if an app you want has ads before you download it/purchase it and not do so.

I don't get the mindset that ads are bad. In my mind ads are 100x better than paying 500 monthly access fees for different apps and websites. I don't know why anyone would find that more appealing or beneficial. Yet with all the ad hating that is were the internet and mobile space is headed.

What I mean is if ads are downloaded as part of the app, and you downloaded that app over 3G, not only are the ads eating up your bandwidth, they're eating up the precious few gigabytes on your phone as well-- a double whammy. However, if they're streamed, they'll be streamed every time you open the app, thus eating even more of your bandwidth, so basically the customer loses either way.

Ad Mob
enriching mobile

I suppose its a matter of opinion, however I fail to see how my mobile experience is "enriched" by ads. Thats all part of the con however, and TV has been very successful at it...convincing people that advertisement is just a part of the experience. Over time most everyone just accepts it. You don't think 'ad awards shows' contribute to this? What is *your* favorite ad?

I accept ads are a way for companies providing free content and recouping their money w/ ads. Fair ball. Where is the line drawn however? You pay for your device, you pay for your bandwidth, you pay for your software & aps... there is a gray area in there somewhere and have little doubt eventually the lines will be blurred and we'll see ad-creep occurring.
