Can't be a separate browser

If I recall correctly, there has been some speculation that the terms restrict creating a separate browser. I'm not sure if it was ever denied by Apple, but we'll see.

I can't get to the SDK terms, but here is a link on the subject.

one previous thread about flash with the majority of the posts along the lines of "good im glad there will be no flash for the iphone, i dont want it!" blah blah "adobe makes crap!".

now its announced adobe will be making some type of flash for the iphone and the majority of posts are positive!

rofl how quickly the tune changes. boggles the mind.

Apple has ever right to reject apps as they see fit. If you don't like it, you can still develop your app for Safari on the iPhone.

I don't foresee any lawsuits against Apple on this. Honestly, if anyone did try to sue Apple over this, they will lose.

This is very different then developing for a console or desktop system. Apple is under contract obligations to protect AT&T and other carrier networks. Its a very different world.

$10 says this is going to run like absolute **** and drain the battery dry in record time.

Missing Piece

Steve said there was a missing piece, a product that just wasn't there.

I know this isn't a new thought on MacRumors, but I think Apple is working on their own Flash equivalent. Apple doesn't like the amount of control Adobe has over the internet-media market, and the second class treatment Mac OS X gets when it comes to Flash products. Flash on Mac OS X sucks, in my opinion.

Since web developers want to make sure that their sites work with the iPhone, they are already in a position to do some remodeling anyway; they might as well use Apple's Flash-equivalent. Everybody wants their site to look great and work well on the iPhone.

I think we will see a Flash equivalent come WWDC (even if it is pretty simple). It will be aimed at the mobile market, but positioned to grow into the desktop market as well. WWDC is before the iPhone 2.0 firmware release, so it will be a perfect time to beat Adobe into the internet-media market on the iPhone.

it sounds great but i hope they can fit it in a package that isint a memory hogger and maybe they can really incorporate it nicely into iphone userface

Huh, interesting. I wonder how this will work. In any case, it's cool they're going to try something.

But WHERE is A2DP Bluetooth? USB/Bluetooth Keyboard/Printing and Tethering support?! I also want to stream from my iPhone to a Mac or Apple TV, so I don't have to connect a cable to display content remotely... I also want to display my iPhone screen on a Mac/Apple TV WITHOUT connecting a cable!

geez, all these advancements are really making me question if i want to drop verizon and switch to at&t just for the iPhone. expensive but...it's becoming worth it.

I think I have only went to one site on my iphone that used flash, most of the sites I go to are basic sites or rss feeds so don't think flash is that big of a deal.

Maybe:
  1. There are different people posting different opinions
  2. People are happy they can install Flash, but also that it doesn't come standard

IM/Email integration & WiMAX 4G in addition to HSPA 3G

I would like to see IM/Email integration on the iPhone -- I should be able to right-click a name and either IM, voice/video chat, send file via IM or send file via Email...

Also, give us WiMAX 4G in addition to HSPA 3G, see:

http://xohm.com

People keep talking about the SDK restrictions, but they don't realize that a large enough company can get around that. Adobe will develop Flash for iPhone, Apple will integrate it into Safari and all will be well. Same goes for AIM on iPhone, Apple will relax the restrictions or integrate it into the OS.

TEG

just pointing out a general trend i see. seems that popular cell phone/smartphone features are thought of as bad/unnecessary one minute and then as soon as apple announces its coming to the iphone its amazing. ;)

No we all still think that, but this way abode can sink lots of money in to it.
Most people will be use the mobile web not having it and never miss it.
Websites will gear MobileWebVersion not to use it and not miss it.
The minority of people who think they need it will get the standalone browser off apps store half will stop using after a week, the rest after a month.

All will be well.

Me thinks SVG & CSS Animations/H.264 should obsolete Flash

See some CSS Animations examples here:
http://webkit.org/blog/138/css-animation/

while SVG and CSS transforms are great, cross-browser support is spotty at best. the nice thing about flash is the simplicity. develop once, deploy anywhere with 99.9% compatibility. it's also smaller than dhtml libraries like mootools or prototype when trying to accomplish the same tasks thanks to the fact it gets compiled and compressed in to machine bytecode.

flash can also do things that no amount of javascript wizardry can touch.

Pardon me if this has been brought up before but how is the iPhone able to view YouTube videos right now if Flash is not currently installed?

well i guess its good that people will have the option and opportunity to see if its worth it. :D

i like having the option on my phone even if i dont use it often.

In my opinion the best version of flash was ver. 4. That is when all the interactive stuff really took off, but wasn't so complicated that web designers could do simple programming.

Wasn't flash 4 licensed into quicktime (I know at least ver. 3 was)? I assume that quicktime can still play flash movies before a certain version?

Okay I searched the web: They disabled flash playback in 7.3:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307176

because:
Multiple vulnerabilities exist in QuickTime's Flash media handler, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution. With this update, the Flash media handler in QuickTime is disabled except for a limited number of existing QuickTime movies that are known to be safe.

I think that apple could probably work around this? The actually supported all the way up to flash ver. 5: http://www.simnet.is/klipklap/quicktime/

In the end, I just think that jobs doesn't want crappy and bloated flash on his elegant, and simple (in a good way) device. And I don't think he likes adobe.

They have one major item remaining before I stop whining! ;)

Don't forget it is still lacking adequate data protection/encryption which will cause many corporations to avoid the iPhone. What good is the remote wipe when a thief can just turn the radio off and then have all the time he needs browsing through the offline data on the device?
