I think you are assuming that the time and cost involved is trivial? And all for spreading goodwill to a relatively small number of geeks who care about old, abandoned software?

Goodwill is nice karma but somebody has to pay for it. Businesses are not charities. It really is not realistic to think of them as such.

Nevertheless, some developers/publishers do release older software for free.
You are addressing the specifics of why that is not profitable and I'm addressing the principle of goodwill and the respect it engenders when shown. No, businesses aren't charities but it is not beyond the scope of good business practice to engage customers and promote the brand without making an immediate profit.

Companies tend to promote brand awareness without giving away their IP as it otherwise devalues it. Why pay if you can get it for free?

So to cut through all the sill B/S, if one downloads the CS2, will it work? A simple Yes or No answer may help quite a few people out...and if it's a No, maybe tell them what they need to do to get it working? No need to stray off topic about legality...

I know right... Jeez...
Go to the website, login with a free Adobe ID, download either the full CS2 or just Photoshop. Serial codes are right next to the download button. Install with serial, done. Nothing else to do, should work perfectly.

Please start another thread if you guys want to argue, because quite frankly no one cares.

This is a very bad analogy. It is an entirely difference concept if I were to make a copy of it, take the copy, and leave the original behind for the intended person.

Yes, but it's still the same concept as taking thats something that's not yours. What if in the box contained a billion grains of rice and you took 1, there would be a negligible difference. Or what about a show- if you snuck past security to watch the performance, even though you're not necessarily inhibiting anyone paying customers viewing experience, your actions are not ethical. You're stealing (amongst other things).

You do get my point though. And really my point is that people like to skirt the reality.

Although I do get the point you're trying to make here, which does raise the question of why they haven't put in extra measures to prevent anyone from downloading. Perhaps they don't even care enough to do so, as they aren't going to make any more money off the ancient software or lose any money by letting anyone download it. It won't run on newer Macs, and users of older Macs are no longer being marketed to by the current versions still sold.

I would imagine they reason they didn't secure it because
1. There are so few people using PPC computers.
2. Few people using PPC now in 2015 probably would be willing paying the high price tag of the Adobe programs anyways
3. Tracking down and verifying purchases from 7+ years ago or keeping their server going would cost more money than it's worth for the risk of lost sales involved

Adobe is a business, I imagine #3 is the more significant factor here. I think they didn't protect it out of a cost-benefit analysis. By not protecting the software it does not mean they want you to download it despite what their request is.
