I have the same computer and by mistake uninstall the flash and cant intall it again..can you help me..??

Adobe doesn't make it easy, but you should be able to find what you need in this: http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/ge...hive/fp_10.1.102.64_and_9.0.289.0_archive.zip

Or you could try the recently hacked version that tricks websites into thinking that it's a later release than it actually is. This is helpful until newer code & features are actually needed. Hacked version: http://www.steelbin.com/FPforFBPPC.zip

There is another option which works on PPC and Intel Macs called YouTube 5. It's an extension for Safari which plays the HTML 5 version of the file. I tested it on my 12" 1.5GHz PowerBook with 1.25GB and it played smoothly in 360p. I use it on my MacBook and love it. It will also support Vimeo and Facebook HTML 5 video.

No way

There is no way to "get around" it, as has been stated many times Adobe stopped releasing flash for macs with 10.1. Newer versions will not work on PPC macs like your Powerbook. There is a hack out there (search for flash for facebook ppc macs),it is a hacked 10.1 flash that "looks" like 11.1. It will prevent facebook and a few other sites balking at your old flash. Its probably not the safest thing ever, but it will work. For now.

Your best bet is to move on and discover ways around the evil that is flash, there are TONS of them. I will list but a few:

In tenfourfox: flashvideoreplacer and downloadhelper extensions, then you can play flv or mp4 files outside a browser in VLC, quicktime etc. There is also Quicktime enabler, numerous greasemonkey scripts....

In safari and omniweb and icab: Install Greasekit (involves installing a SIMBL file as before), then viewtube and other greasemonkey scripts, replaces flash with quicktime, works very well on my ibook

mactubes: Hands down the best method for youtube on older macs.

mintube: Is similar to mactubes, but mac owners have to pay. Linux users do not.

hope that helps

My iBook needs password for Flash install

Hello Mac Gurus - I have a problem. Let me start by saying I love this little iBook I have. It's a Mac OS X 10.4.11 with a 600MHz PowerPC G3 processor with 640 MB of RAM. It was built for me by a former b/f who's a MAC IT guy. We don't talk anymore, hence the problem I have: I don't know the administrator password and I can't seem to figure out how to get around the need to put in a password to CHANGE the password. I've tried everything I can think of ...I Googled the problem and came up with the instructions (below). I need to know if they're right before I do them, as I don't know diddly squat about all this. Of course, the reason I'm doing this is so that I can uninstall Adobe Flash so that I can download the latest supported version so that I can run streaming video from the Internet on this iBook, which I've been able to do in the past, but it was choppy. Now I can't do it at all. I've tried downloading the right version of Adobe Flash - I looked in the Apple troubleshooting tips online, but I can't get the old version deleted because I need a password to change the old password so that I can uninstall software. This is ridiculous. Even so, I love this little iBook so much I'm not willing to give up. Can anyone help me?

Thanks, Diana

Turn on the iBook G4 and hold down “Command” and “S” on the keyboard as the computer starts up. Keep holding them down until you see text on the screen.

2
Type “/sbin/fsck –y/sbin/mount –uw /sh /etc/rc” at the first prompt. Press the “Return” key.

3
Type “passwd [username]” at the next prompt, replacing “Username” with the user name whose password you want to change. Remove the brackets when you type it in. Press “Return.”

4
Enter the new password twice. Hit the “Return” key.

5
Type “Reboot” and press “Return" when you finish entering the new password for your account.

6
Enter the new password at the login screen and you will be able to get onto the iBook Mac computer.

well, I've never used those cmd line instructions, but changing the admin password on a mac is trivial, just boot off an install disc, start the install process (you will not be installing, don't worry) when you get to the menu bar choose tools, password, change it, reboot and off you go. However:

Flash is going to be a horrible performer on your ibook with a 600mhz G3. I know, I had exactly the same machine until the dreaded video problem tanked it. Adobe has abandoed support for PPC macs, the last version available is 10.1 .If you decided to install it you still should be able to view 240p files in the browser itself (like safari or omniweb) if you let the video load first.

Other solutions are to use tenfourfox (which has plugins like flash disabled by default due to security) which is the latest version of firefox for PPC macs and flashvideoreplacer/downloadhelper extensions. With those you can select the lower quality 240 flv files and paste the link into quicktime or vlc and it should stream pretty well. You can probably still download (using either above extensions) a higher quality 360p the file and use either vlc or quicktime to play it back once its fully downloaded.

If you can step up to a G4 800mhz ibook or higher you have more options (like the best available option-mactubes) and much. much better playback. G4 ibooks can be had for 100-150 on ebay these days.

Hello Imixmuan; Thanks for the advice - Last night, I actually attracted on Facebook with a post I put out the attention of a pal who's quite bright about this stuff and he spent several hours with me on the mess - I had managed, somehow, to change the password (don't ask me how - I don't remember!), so all that was needed to was correctly uninstall any Adobe Flash I had and download and reinstall the best version for this iBook. the fun part is I have learned so much! You're right of course, it will never really stream videos properly - and I've a Dell PC that works just fine for that. I just use that Dell to bits and I don't want to burn it out, so am looking to this iBook to do some duty to give the Dell a break. While I'd love to go get myself a high-end product, I'm putting my son through college, and he HAS to have the high-end product, so I make do. :) Anyway, anyway, I haven't looked at Firefox in quite some time so I'll go do that. By the way, as long as we're on the topic, regarding the Dell, how does one remove the keyboard to clean under it? I've heard that's possible. Do you know? (I guess I could google it huh?) :) Thanks... Diana

Oh and I don't have an install disk.

tenfourfox, not firefox

you need to go here:

http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/

scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the G3 optimized build, it will run best on your ibook. Tenfourfox is a community build of the latest Firefox, which abandoned PowerPC and 10.4 with version 4.0. It is safe, secure and mo-dern.

Omniweb 5 wil also run well on your ibook.

I am glad you got your problem sorted.

?

I read it rather quickly, and noted it said if I need to use Flash not to download TenFourFox.

So ... why would I need it if most everything out there these days uses Flash?

That confused me a little.

Thanks for your help.

i think i have finally sussed it!

Hi guys, i have had a powerbook g4, 17" 1.5ghz, 1.5 gb ram for a couple of years and have never been able to run flash web videos... until now...

I did a clean install of leopard and installed the normal updates, I stopped installing the java updates when it said i needed version 5, I have found that it basically disables the flash player telling you that you need a new version of the player and all web based flash videos i have tried work perfect, there is generally about 5-10 seconds of stuttering at the start then it plays flawlessly every time as long as you dont try to take it about 360p quality or make it full screen. There is no need to change any of the flash player settings or the power / processor settings of the mac. I have done a clean install once more and follows the same process and got the same result. The only thing I have noticed is the fans kick in quicker than normal.

Trust me guys this works and my powerbook is not going to be replaced until it dies! Let me know how you get on!!
