Adobe today updated its Lightroom apps for Mac and iOS, bringing a set of new image editing features as well as the ability to edit video for the first time.

With the release of version 5.4 for Mac and 7.4 for iOS, Lightroom now enables you to edit videos using the same controls that are used for photos. You can trim videos, adjust color and exposure, and apply presets optimized for video.

Meanwhile, Adobe has added a new class of AI-powered adaptive presets that allow you to perform one-click edits to the sky or subject in photos, while a new Preset Amount Slider gives you the ability to control the intensity of a preset.

Elsewhere, there's a new Red Eye Removal feature that automatically finds and removes red eyes with a single click, and a new Compare view lets you compare photos side-by-side.

There are also more than 50 new, handcrafted premium presets designed for videos, portraits, and live concert photos, and the community-based Discover section is now searchable, allowing you to more easily find topics of interest as well as photographers you'd like to follow.

Also new in this version is a new Invert Mask option that lets you invert masks at both the group and component levels, and you can also now choose to Duplicate & Invert masks.

In addition, the Select Sky and Select Subject AI masks can now be copied and pasted to other photos and they will be recomputed automatically, so there's no need to manually apply the new masks to each photo.

Lightroom for Mac is available through Adobe's Creative Cloud 1TB Lightroom plan for $9.99 per month, or through its 20GB and 1TB Photography plans, which bundle Photoshop and Lightroom together and cost $9.99 and $19.99 per month, respectively.

Lightroom for iPhone and iPad can be downloaded from the App Store for free and include several in-app premium storage subscription options starting from $1.99 per month for 40GB.

Does Aperture still work if you bought it?

Stop with new features and make it more smooth on new m1 max MacBook Pro’s

Anyone else miss Aperture?
That's a big yes. The integration with the ecosystem on top of the editing and cataloging tools made it a really great product. Lightroom Classic sets the standard, I do admit, but nowadays things are weird because of this new LR product, which does not have nearly the feature set of Classic though it does have better syncing support with Adobe Cloud to the iOS/iPadOS versions of LR.

If Aperture had been maintained, and especially if it had been expanded with iOS/iPadOS versions and iCloud sync (like Photos), I'd have totally stuck with it.

Any feature updates to their tools for photographers and video editors are appreciated by Adobe.

Does anyone know if it still doesn’t support filtering and search in shared/collaborative albums (that is when an album is shared with you)?

But no video editing for LR Classic. That’s a big fail. Honestly, who even cares about CC Lightroom? It’s lacking so much.

Nope. Back when Aperture and Lightroom came out in the mid 2000s I compared both. Aperture's method of doing "non-destructive" brush edits (dodge, burn etc) was clunky and required creating a a large non-editable TIFF. Lightroom's edits were truly editable - many years later. Lightroom continued to evolve, Aperture not so much.

Figured Adobe, a company whose core business was image processing science, would be in it for the long run. Apple, didn't seem likely. Now having 100,000+ edited images, one of the best decisions I've ever made was choosing to go with LR over Aperture.

Still super pleased (even though they went subscription) as they continue add outstanding features through frequent updates. I use LR everyday and it's always a pleasure to use.

Yes, I pretty much left the Apple ecosystem because of that. I bought a Mac so I could run software that only runs on Macs. Today with Aperture gone, there is not much that runs only on Mac.

I moved from Final Cut X to DaVinci Resolve and am very happy with the move

If you like Lightroom then there is no reason to run it on a Mac, But I moved to using Nikon's "Studio" with if you shoot with Nikon cameras is very good.

There are other examples where the best software is no longer Mac-only.

I would never even consider using LR Classic since it’s not cloud based. So I guess, someone like me cares about CC. Also the UI of LrC is horrendous, which puts me off extremely much

But how large is your photo collection? I would use LR instead of LRClassic but the deal breaker is that my photos sum up to about 2TB. It is very expensive to pay for Adobe Cloud room for that size, I understand.

That’s a very good point. That is going to be a problem for my business as well, but right now it seems like the best solution out there if collaboration and a good UI are key. I hope Adobe will focus more on shared albums and collaboration and offer a better deal for businesses down the line. So yeah, dad did perfect, but way better for us than LrC.

Tbh, I just wish Apple Photos was more advanced. I love using it and actually prefer the UX to Lr CC

I hear yah, brutha. I just want a release where all they do is bug fixes and code tightening. Something like OSX Leopard ==> Snow Leopard. I'm weary of these bloated programs that require 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD and a 128 core processor just to run.😬

New bugs features is what drives sales.😩 Only the few demands of the old tools being honed to perfection.
