I think that Avid is the best for just plain editing hands down.

But when it comes to making a complete project I have to go with FCP.

If my work switched to Avid Newscutter I would definitely switch my home system to Avid, that way I can use the same cutter for my freelance gigs and my job. But no they make use the crappy Grass Valley NewsEdit system which is no fun (I hope they let the Edius team re-work it cause NewsEdit just feels dated).

I like FCP, Avid and Premiere. I feel that FCP is the most balanced system.

Avid is definitely king, though a lot of people don't even know what it is unless they've used it, it's just a different level due to the hardware requirements for a good setup. What I found interesting was that the high-end users deal with the same "Avid being Avid" fun (you know what I'm talking about) even with certified workstations that the "low-end" users experience. I'm guessing this has a little bit to due with the Final Cut Studio defectors. No wonder Avid wanted to drop OS X support years back.

I was surprised to find out how many TV stations use Premiere and even Vegas. Premiere is a very capable program and won't break the bank. I know a few people in radio and they still use CoolEditPro 2 to record. Talk about budget constraints.

Avid definitely has it's quirks, as all software does. Avid wanted to drop Mac support when Apple was languishing in Moto/G4 hell but all the Mac-based users raised hell and Avid quickly backpedaled.

This is what keeps me as a FCP man myself. I considered grabbing a real mobile video workstation from Dell, and switching back to Windows with the Adobe Master Collection and Lightroom, but even then I loose the ability to update my site in a matter of hours, since I am NO web designer.

FCP integrates well with Aperture and vice versa, then Aperture integrates with iLife (iWeb mainly) and iWork and Mac OS X etc. iWeb works 100% with Mobile Me and MM works perfectly with iCal and Address Book and Mail, then to top it off, I use Daylite and Billings for the freelance bit and that app works perfectly with iCal and AB.

Them Apple b@st@rds have me locked in. :)

Final Cut Pro has about 50% of the professional market in the US. Avid now has 22% FC Studio is such a great value.

The Wikipedia link sites TVBEurope article which states, as you said
"According to research specialist SCRI, in 2007 Apple took 49% of the US professional editing marketing with Avid trailing on just 22%."

Anyone have an idea/guess of how this breaks down? Does it mean that there are about twice as many licensed copies of FCP than Avid (MC or whatever) being used for professional purposes? Would you suspect that this includes freelance editors?

I thought Avid made up a lot more of the professional editing world. Doesn't it still make up the vast majority of film (for movies) editing?

While this isn't a scientific breakdown, the lower the budget the higher the odds people are using FCP. Avid still dominates the higher end of the market which is why it's still noteworthy for a big movie or prime time TV show to be cut on FCP.

That's the biggest reason it is noteworthy. It's tantamount to shooting the cover photos of Vogue with a D40 or a pinhole camera (if you don't mind me exaggerating).

Of course it's the person not the tool that makes great images, but it will be nice though when FCP becomes a good enough program that people aren't surprised when it's chosen for high projects. It some respects it's already there. In other respects it's still pretty far behind Avid.
