Find alternative apps at all costs!

Honestly I wish I could but I have 2 dead people's Lightroom Classic catalogues and my own one totalling about 4TB.

Plus there isn't anything else that does decent catalogue, actually works properly, has the same quality editing tools and is compatible with 2 dead people's lightroom catalogues.

What I want is to pay once for Lightroom only like the old days. But it's about monthly recurring revenue now.

But it's a beer and a half a month in cash so meh.

That is a Lite edition badly designed software and they charge you a subscription if you want the full edition which is like a chihuahua version of Photoshop.
Nope. There is literally nothing that points in that direction.

In fact Affinity is the most powerful single App in the graphics design industry.

It was, except it used to crash all the time. I lost count how many times I've lost progress to a QuarkXpress crash. You had to save often.

Yep. That's why our old publishing team's keyboards were yellow - all the smoking to keep them calm.

No thanks. I like having a career and I invest in having the best tools, which are all tax deductions. I get that 50% off every year on Black Friday.

Likewise I don’t beg for free gas or free train tickets when I need to visit clients or travel for work.
I have clients and a business too but I use the Affinity suite of apps and FCP for video work. I like write offs too but I also like controlling my overhead.

You start over with a brand new account each year so that you’re a new customer?

No, there is a loophole EVERYONE uses and Adobe turns a blind eye too. You downgrade to single app plan before Black Friday and then grab the full Creative Cloud Pro 50% deal on Black Friday. People have been doing this since forever. There’s no penalty if your account is over a year old.

Sure sure.

If that was true they would not have sold themselves to Canva. That showed how much they believed in their future that they sold the company like when Macromedia sold themselves to a bigger company.

Look, we have been through this for 30 years. In the mid 90s the Paint Shop Pro guys had Adobe Derangment Syndrome. 10 years later the GIMP guys had Adobe Derangement Syndrome. Then the Macromedia guys had Adobe Derangement Syndrome. Now it’s Affinity.

im in the process of purging adobe from my life. even before i consider cost creative cloud and acrobat have been some of the most awful software i have ever used.

I mean you gotta be kind of stupid to buy an Adobe product now, and I say that as a shareholder since I know there's a lot of stupid out there lol.

How's Affinity as a photoshop replacement? I'm pretty adept in photoshop and do a lot of layering work and photo editing. Using brush tools, blending masks and etc. Bouncing back and forth from Lightroom.

Can Affinity be a one to one replacement? Is there a Lightroom x Photoshop combo that isn't adobe?

I love all the competition coming after adobe (affinity, figma, etc.). While I use adobe everyday, I can't wait to switch.
You can switch already, switch to Affinity, it's free and much much better, I am a long time adobe user and I hate adobe so much, I'm so happy I switched to Affinity, however I am still keeping my adobe subscription for now, but I'm planning to cancel in a few months once I am fully used to Affinity

OH, how nice...50% off a SUBSCRIPTION.
Not just a subscription, but one with significant cancellation penalties if you try and cancel before the full 12 months ($419.64) is consumed.

Adobe really are the scummiest company and a world leader in en********ation, and these days the open source alternatives mean you really shouldn't fall for their fine-print trap.

While a 50% discount seems enticing, Adobe subscription prices are still very high. Not going to subscribe.

I listened to an interview of Walter Isaacson tonight. He wrote a book on Jobs. He said when Jobs returned to Apple he asked MS and Adobe to make software for Mac. MS agreed, Adobe did not. And that may be why Apple dropped support for Adobe Flash.

My wife has been working with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign for all her professional life, but tried the new version of Affinity 2 weeks ago… she is not renewing her Adobe subscription.

If you need the tools, the Black Friday deals aren’t bad. If you already have an account, just chat with customer service and either start a cancellation process and either wait for a retention offer and if that doesn’t come, go to chat, tell them you want the Black Friday pricing without having to cancel. I’ve never had them decline offering it to my account.

Also, B&H offers a code for $340 if you just want to use them — yet another way to add to your existing account and avoid an auto-charge. Also, the trick to get out of a big cancellation fee is to just drop down to a single-app plan (which is allowed) and then to cancel that plan within 14 days.

Adobe sucks, but Adobe is also the standard for most of us. And Canva is fine for a web-based thing (better than fine, even), but if you need Photoshop or Illustrator, the Affinify Suite isn’t a substitute if you need compatible and reliable files. Not everyone needs Adobe. Most people don’t.
But if you do, you do.

I’m just glad I get to use Figma for most of my work now, but I’m stuck with Premiere and that isn’t going to change.

Most non-pro users should be satisfied with Affinity or even Canva. I'm unfortunately stuck with InDesign as it's the only layout software with powerful enough CJK related features. Photoshop and Illustrator also have features without real alternatives. Not so much (ymmv) for After Effects, Lightroom or Premiere.

Also once in a while I would think Adobe should pay me for running their crappy unoptimized software on my computer.

Affinity is free so you can try it out. It's by no means a drop in replacement for Photoshop, let alone Photoshop + Lightroom. Pixelmator Pro + Photomator combo is promising, but you know, Apple discontinued Aperture.

I cannot agree with all the people saying that Affinity apps are better than Adobe's. I've used Affinity apps for a few years now, and I still find the UI incredibly frustrating. It almost feels as if Affinity's designers don't use their own software—not on a professional level anyway.

But will I go back to Adobe and allow them to hold all my design files hostage if I don't pay an eternal ransom? Never.
