Sounds like even though you opened the library, the files are in the wrong place.
iTunes at home expects your music to be here:
/Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/iTunes Media/
However, even though you opened the library on your laptop, the iTunes library thinks the music will be in the same location. Instead, your files are probably at something location like:
Is that correct? If so, you could try making a symlink on the remote machine, so that /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes points to /Volumes/<sharename>/Music/iTunes
Then it would look like the files are in the right location. I've done something similar before and had it work out.
Whatever you do, don't have iTunes open on both computers at the same time. They don't like that.
An alternative that I settled on, that does much more, is Slink. http://slinkware.com/ It will allow you to access pretty much any service on your home network (my TiVos, printer, iPhoto, etc). And also lets you browse the internet via Firefox via your home connection (everything is tunneled through SSH).
