On the fence

I'm contemplating upgrading to the iPhone 3G, but I am on the fence about whether it makes sense to do so. The current iPhone works perfectly and as mentioned, the change to a plastic back seems like a downgrade from the aluminum back. Additionally, there's not much difference between the old version and the new version with the exception of 3G and GPS. I probably won't need the GPS (I don't drive) and am usually on WiFi.

I am an early adopter, so I do like to have the latest and greatest, but with the increase in cost for the new plans, I may hold off for a while. The only thing that is somewhat enticing is the cost of the phone itself. You can't beat the $299 sticker price for the 16gb version. I'd be pissed, however, if Apple were to drop a 32gb version 6 months after the launch of the iPhone 3G at a price tag of say $249 with enhanced features like better camera, video capabilities, etc.

I highly doubt that they would do that anytime soon. You remember how pissed people got when they just dropped the price - let alone add new features.

Yeah Att has a coverage map. Just type in your zipcode and select 3G in the options.

Beautiful, worked like a champ and coverage is excellent in my area! WOOT! :D

Thanks!

Battery Life!

The current iPhone's battery runs out way too quickly, often before the day is done. For this alone, the iPhone 3G is a very welcome upgrade in this household.

No kidding...300 hours of standby battery life - that's almost 13 days

Sure, people got so pissed they're now getting ready to line up to buy the new version.

In answer to the OP question, unless you don't have access to WiFi most of the time, it sounds like you don't need it. I must admit, I felt a bit underwhelmed when they announced the new phone. It's virtually identical to the current one except for the two new features. GPS is nice, but not really that necessary. 3G is great, but you still need WiFi to download songs. I think this phone appeals more to people who wanted the first one but kept away due to the price tag.

I'm also curious if there is improvement in the call clarity. I thought the iPhone was a decent cellphone, but I had to use a BlackBerry curve for about a week and the difference in call quality was remarkable. Actually gave me second thoughts about sticking with the iPhone. If call clarity is greatly improved on this one, then it might make the upgrade worth it for me.
