I purchased from BB but then we have no Apple or Microcenter here. Other than having them try to push that extended warranty on me, I have no complaints. I even exchanged the 13 inch I bought a week later for a 15, no hassles whatsoever. If you must buy from BB, stand your ground and don't let them sell you that extended warranty or any of the other stuff they try to get you to buy. I'll get my extended warranty through Apple Care before my first year is out.

What's wrong with Best Buy? Whats wrong with their Service Plans? They don't offer insurance. Best Buy's MacBook(Pro) Service Plan is much better than AppleCare. AppleCare doesn't cover any accidental damage. Best Buy covers any damage that occurs. Regardless of how it happened. If they can't repair it, they will replace the machine.
They pretty much told me that at the end of the two years I could break the machine on purpose and it would be replaced, that alone makes it better than AppleCare. Now, personally I could never bring myself to intentionally harm my MBP, but it's nice to know. ;)

Easy.
At Best Buy, they fix your computer first, then they replace it. If it's not covered, then you're screwed.
At Apple, they GIVE YOU A NEW COMPUTER (or a motherboard, which is pretty much the same thing) FIRST, then they fix the old one and sell as refurb if possible. They try their best to FIX IT if it's not covered. Also, they pretty much do it on the spot, transactions and all.
That's a $1000-$2000 price difference there. And if you're clumsy enough to cause accidental damage, you shouldn't get such a luxury laptop that needs exquisite care, but rather have gotten a rugged laptop, something more like an Alienware or Lenovo (which is former IBM, the world's most reliable computers, for you young people).

Finally, I would never trust a company that labels the Samsung Series 9 as having a "128GB 5400RPM HDD Solid State Drive" LOL

I think you misunderstood me. I have nothing against Best Buy. I have never used their repair service or bought an extended warranty through them. I like that I can buy a Macbook Pro or any other Apple or non Apple product locally....I just don't like any company..that goes for BB, Apple, Microsoft, etc...trying to sell me something I didn't ask for, especially if I made it clear I was only interested in the computer itself.

That is good to know, but it is different from what I understood. I was told in the past that only accidental damage would be covered, and they would make that determination when I brought it into the store. I also understood that in order to get accidental damage coverage, I would have to get a higher priced plan (not the regular one). Am I misremembering this?

In addition, they didn't offer global coverage. I travel outside the US a lot, and it is quite nice to know that I can walk into any apple store anywhere in the world and get a problem sorted out.

Friends who have used Applecare have amazing stories about the speed and convenience. This is something I have NOT experienced at Best Buy in the past. In fact, we have had some real throwdowns over warrantied products. In general, I am OK with BestBuy. But, if it is a choice between AppleCare and BestBuy's plan, based on what I know about it, I'd go with Apple.

I believe global coverage is the main advantage offered by Apple. If you travel a lot, or if you plan on taking an international course on college, then the global coverage is a no brainer.

If you've ever had any experience with Best Buy you'll know why people don't like them. I bought one of their service plans a while back and my HDD failed. It took them 4 weeks to fix it. I was without my laptop for a full month. For as much as they charge there services suck. Plus it was a hassle just trying to get them to fix it. They made very excuse as to why they shouldn't be responsible for it even though I had a full service plan. Perhaps it's just my Best Buy but they absolutely suck when it comes to customer service. I considered using them to get accidential coverage for the macbook pro but it just wasn't worth it. I'll stick with Apple.

Best buy is a fine place to make the purchase.
You can always buy apple care.
BB extended warranties are hit or miss depending on the product.
They try to push the warranties and I simply say, Thanks but no but if within a week or so if I change my mind I'll swing back in.

I'd definitely say that's a location-based issue. I have 3 Best Buy's in a 15 mile radius of me and only one of them (Westbury, NY) has spot-on customer service. They get the point when you don't want extra stuff like service plans, and if you ever need anything done they're super helpful.

The other two locations (Baldwin and Valley Stream, NY) are both run by unmotivated college kids who think one of life's greatest struggles is getting through a day of work at Best Buy.

Really kids?

Really?

Ok so it's done!

Posting from my new 13" MBP. Got it from the Apple store and they honored the Microcenter price of $999!

Yeaaaaaaaah!
