Many people would like to buy the UK iphone to use with their existing network. Unfortunately it is currently not possible to unlock it with software.

It is not impossible though. There are ways to make the Iphone work with any 02 simcard. More interestingly there is also a way to make the UK iphone work with any sim card (apart from 3 network sims). This method does however require some extra hardware and a degree of technical knowledge.

On ebay people are charging as much as £200 to unlock iphones using this method. They are also selling the hardware element (turboSIM) that you require to use your current sim in the iphone, for more than 3 times its wholesale price.

The iphone costs enough as it is, without some ruthless individuals making huge profits out if peoples technical ignorance.

If you want advice on the current options for getting hold of an unlocked Iphone, or unlocking one you have already bought, then my skype name is mike07905 I will be online most nights from 7ish. Don't donate your money to an ebay cowboy..

I only tend to use the modem thing while in the car travelling (someone else driving) tends to alternate from slow to fast speeds. Happy enough with the speed when i am parked. Apparently its supposed to go up to 3.5mb/s double what vodafone could offer hence why i chose t-mobile.

oops... looks like I reposted in the wrong forum and they both got reposted here!

tonywob, if you bought it less than 14 days ago you could still get your money back..

Using the iphone on something other than the iphone contract is the only fair way to do it, as far as the consumer goes.. you pay apple for the phone fair enough, but they also take a percentage of the monthly revenue aswell.. which is partly why its so expensive for no minutes and no texts! There is the unlimited data, but its highly unlikely that many people will be using more than a couple of hundred meg a month at edge speeds, and edge still covers less than 40% of the country, which means that most of the time you are trying to download full webpages over 2g speeds.. the fact is that a 5 pound data bolt on from any of the other carriers is more than most people would use.
Also, when you have a contract with a phone company you build up credit on your account. It is far more expensive for them to attract new customers than it is to hang onto old ones, which is why if you tell them your leaving at the end of your contract they will often give you a much better deal. Last time my minutes were doubled, my texts trippled and I got a brand new phone for free. The fact is that using the iphone on my vodaphone contract costs £10 less a month than the cheapest o2 one, and I get as many minutes and texts as the most expensive iphone ones. And when the contract is up I will probably get an even better deal and a new phone.. which I can sell.. to go towards my next Iphone! You get the iphone contract you dont get any of this... you do get visual voicemail though..
