Just a suggestion but also check out Flickr for Group pictures of various places in Italy and see what people are shooting with. We're heading to Hawaii in October and I've been going through some of the Hawaii groups as well as various lens range groups to see how people use them and what they are best for. It's funny, I went to school in Hawaii for 2 years but I didn't look at things through a lens so I have no idea what range would be best. I might just take a few lenses instead of one hero lens.

Have fun in Italy! A friend of mine went there this past September with a S3IS and got some very, very good shots.

I have a feeling that a 24-70 (I assume you're talking about Nikkor) would be too big and cumbersome to take on a vacation.

Personally, I would take a 17-35 f2.8, 85 f1.4 and 70-300.

Hmm, well any f/2.8 glass is usually huge, but I don't think the 24-70 is too big though considering that it will be fitted into a camera bag. :)

I just came back from a two week trip around western europe including Italy
I brought my rented 10-20mm fisheye along with the kit lens and a 50mm, i
only used the 50mm lens once and i did not even use the kit lens.
I would take the 24-70 and if you could take the 10-20mm
