My friend is leaving his job this week and losing his company iPhone and needs a new one. Best Buy has the iPhone 7s on sale this week - is the iPhone 7 Plus at $100 (128GB) off a good deal given the proximity to the launch of the next gen next month? If I remember the launches in the past, $100 off is about all you can be expected to find the previous gen version for or will there be more savings to be had? He doesn't want to buy a used 7/7Plus.

You can get better deals most of the time by buying through carriers if you have a trade in of some sort or do financing. But yes, $100 off is what they usually discount the old phones when the new come out.

He's got nothing to trade in. He's had a company phone for a while. Single guy- no family plan. He came to me for advice and I'm like huh?

If I were to buy an iPhone, I would wait and spend the extra cheese to get the 7s or the 8 instead of 100$ off the 7 at this current moment.

No sense in paying somewhere in the same price range for last years hardware when the new ones will be releasing soon.

$100.00 off at Best Buy is a decent discount. I personally would take advantage of the sale price if time is imperative.

Who's the carrier? Best Buy currently has AT&T Prepaid iPhone SE 32GB and iPhone 6 32GB for $150 and $200 respectively.

even though its on verizon its a usa network phone only , upon leaving the country it will be locked.

Best Buy had it over the weekend for $300 off. Do you even Best Buy bro?

You obviously didn't do your research, because that $300.00 doesn't apply to all carriers. And that sale is expired from looking online now, so that wouldn't benefit the OP in any manner pending which carrier his friend has.

Not for AT&T. The amount off is based on carrier. The $300 was for Sprint which is a lousy carrier.
AT&T, highly recommend getting AT&T Prepaid iPhone SE for $150 or some other cheapie AT&T Prepaid Android if your friend wants to see what the latest iPhone will bring. It's locked to AT&T but he should be able to pop in his postpaid SIM and it'll work. Resale's also probably decent relative to the $150 price tag.

Mentioned it as an example of the sort of deals that someone could expect to find. $100 off a 1 year old phone is for suckers.

You're probably one of those who think a year old phone is outdated and useless.

There are many people who would say that people who pay $700-$1000 every year just to have the latest and greatest are also suckers.

That's a poor "Example" you provided. A savings of $100.00 regardless is a savings none the less. Again, not every carrier offers the same incentives.

I usually recommend looking at either Best Buy or Target for iPhone deals. Carriers also may have better deals closer to launch of the new iPhones.

As far as the wait for 7s/8 or buy an iPhone 7/7+ now, it depends. If your friend is one who upgrades every 1-2 years then getting a 7/7+ is probably fine.

If your friend likes to hold onto a device for as long as possible, then I wouldn't recommend getting an iPhone 7/7+ now as the 7s/8 will likely have an extra year of iOS updates compared to the 7/7+. Which makes it more cost effective if you're only getting $100 off at this point assuming the 7s/8 pricing isn't significantly increased.

Cool brahs! Nowhere did I ever make the statement that every carrier offered the same incentive. I also didn’t suggest that I was one of those people who think a 1 year iPhone is useless. Those are some strange things to get out of me disagreeing that $100 off is not much of a deal, but thanks for posting! Enjoy you $100 off last years phone!

Tell your friend to borrow an old phone for 3-4 weeks and pre-order one of the new iPhones that are being announced next month. Somebody has to have an old iPhone or android lying around that he can borrow. He can slum it for like a month or less.

I already stated he doesn't want to buy a used phone. He wants a new one. Aside from wireless charging I can't come up with anything the 7S/Plus would have other than the usual enhancements from the iPhone _ to the iPhone _s line.

Given your friend's requirements, the 7 Plus from Best Buy, at $100 off, makes the most sense to me.

Your friend needs a phone now. Unless your friend is obsessed with having the latest and greatest, waiting for the "8" will have little reward. They're likely to be difficult to come by before November, and who knows what teething pains the new model will have. In the meantime, your friend will have to make do with an iPhone SE that he will have to sell, or a cheap Android.

Just remember, to get the $100 off from Best Buy, your friend has to buy the phone on an AT&T or VZW monthly payment plan. He can pay off the phone immediately if he doesn't want monthly payments.
